According to media reports, The Detroit Pistons have expressed interested in signing veteran big man Jason Collins. In April, Collins made national news by becoming the first openly gay athlete in North America’s four major professional leagues.

The Pistons have had an eventful off-season by signing star forward Josh Smith and trading Brandon Knight to Milwaukee for Brandon Jennings.  Also, they drafted Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Tony Mitchell, and Peyton Siva.

League-wide interest in Collins has been minimal. However, that may due to Collin’s performance over the last couple of seasons and not his sexual orientation. His role on the teams he’s played for has pretty much been an end-of-the-roster type of player. Collins appeared in only 38 games last season, playing for the Boston Celtics and Washington Wizards.

He averaged less than two points per game and two rebounds per game in 10.1 minutes per game. His ability on the court is limited to just being an effective post defender. In which, the Pistons feel as if Collins could provide insurance, sitting behind Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe.
