DETROIT – Thanks to an ankle injury, it seems that the much ballyhooed New York Jets quarterback competition between rookie Geno Smith and starter Mark Sanchez may be put on hold.

Smith, the 39th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft out of West Virginia rolled his right ankle in his NFL debut during a road game against the Detroit Lions.

There is no official word yet the extent of the injury to the former Mountaineer standout, but he will most likely not return to action.  During the game, Smith went 6-of-7 for 47 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions.

A bit tentative in his first NFL start, Smith would try to run upfield on a scramble before rolling his ankle, limp immediately and walk to the Jets’ locker room.
