The hype surrounding the rookie NFL class in 2013 might not be as big as a season ago, but there are still some intriguing pieces.

Non-skill positions ruled the first round, but judging off of recent history, quarterbacks, running backs and linebackers have the best shot at the two awards.  So, who are the early picks for offensive and defensive rookie of the year?

With no first round running backs and only one first round quarterback, the wide receivers have to enjoy their chances of winning offensive rookie of the year.  Leading the charge is Tavon Austin, simply because he has been placed in a situation to succeed.

The St. Louis Rams need a lot of help before they are true playoff contenders again, and it started with giving Sam Bradford better targets to throw to. Austin was arguably the best available in the draft, and he has the speed and playmaking to make an impact right away.

Playing on turf should only give him more chances to excel, as he can simply out maneuver the rest of the league on his way to some impressive numbers.

Geno Smith and Eddie Lacy have the best shots at quarterback and running back respectively, and Tyler Eifert could make a push late in the season. However, Austin’s opportunity is unique and puts him in the driver’s seat for ROTY as well as making him the most attractive rookie pick in fantasy football.

Winning defensive player of the year is difficult for tackles, cornerbacks and other positions with a true lack of statistics. That is why a guy like Ezekiel Ansah could steal the show for the Detroit Lions. The defensive end might not be the most polished defender in the draft, but he has all the tools to play right away and pick up sacks.

The Lions feel like they are a playoff team this season, and Ansah’s play could get them there. Look for him to be a steady fixture for Detroit’s defense for day one, and if he stays healthy, he could close in on around 10 sacks for the year.

If you think a linebacker is destined to win this award, Jon Bostic looks to be a bit better than Jarvis Jones and Sio Moore at this point.

As mentioned before, this might not be a huge year for rookies to make an impact, but there is still talent out there.
