INSCMagazine: Get Social!

Surrogate motherhood today is nothing more than a scientific solution for a serious public issue and a common problem among married couples – infertility.

Often surrogacy program is the only alternative for those couples, who due to medical conditions are not able to have children, and therefore cannot experience the joy of parental happiness.

To construe the use of assisted reproductive technologies and the services of a surrogate mother by those who do not want to doom themselves to a lifelong loneliness as something unethical and immoral would be a gross mistake.

It is not an exaggeration to say that often people find their existence pointless living their lives childless. Meaning that not having an access to a surrogacy program as the last resort to feel the pleasure and delight of rocking their children in their arms will deprive them of the chance of fully enjoying their lives.

Of course, there is an option of adoption a child. But this is radically different from having your own children, who are genetically entirely related to you. Surrogacy is merely a mechanical process, when a healthy woman is capable of gestating and giving birth to your child, due to the fact that your spouse is physically unable to do the same. Surrogate motherhood is a real breakthrough in medical science that opens up new vistas for childless couples.

Surrogate Motherhood: The Physiological Essence

What is a surrogate motherhood from a physiological point of view? The answer to this question is much simpler than people usually think. Surrogate motherhood became possible after the method of in vitro fertilization (IVF) has been invented and developed. In the beginning, the entire procedure follows the path of ordinary in vitro fertilization process. A female egg is retrieved via follicular puncture, subsequently it is fertilized “in vitro” either by husband’s or donor’s sperm and then the resulting embryos are transferred into the uterus of a gestational surrogate who bears and gives a birth to a child or children for genetic parents. And a surrogate mother is in no way connected with the fetus that develops in her womb: neither genetically nor biologically. After a child is born to a surrogate mother in Ukraine, his/her biological (commissioning) parents are reflected on the birth certificate as his/her legal parents.

Surrogate motherhood program

Surrogate motherhood as one of the effective methods of infertility treatments is totally legal in Ukraine. Ukrainian fertility specialists have been successfully implementing surrogacy programs for more than twenty years. Numerous specialized medical centers are effectively applying assisted reproductive technologies (ART) and implementing various surrogacy programs, thereby helping married couples to have their dreams come true.

The Surrogacy Program in Ukraine includes the following stages:

● screening and selection of a surrogate mother;

● full medical examination of a surrogate mother (in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Order No. 787 of September 9th, 2013);

● full medical examination of biological (intended) parents;

● preparation of all necessary legal documentation and contracts associated with a surrogacy program;

● in vitro fertilization procedure (IVF);

● antenatal care and continuation of pregnancy;

● childbirth process;

● finalization of parental rights for biological (genetic) parents through relevant authorities.

Prior to engaging in a surrogacy program, a woman, who is willing to become an intended parent should provide a clinic with a medical conclusion of a duly certified fertility specialist on her infertility (impossibility of carrying a pregnancy), a copy of a marriage certificate, a notarized contract between intended parents and a surrogate mother, and a notarized consent of the surrogate mother’s husband in case if the surrogate is married.

There are mandatory regulatory requirements for a surrogate mother in Ukraine. These requirements are respectively as follows:

● Excellent physical and mental health;

● The presence of at least one or more of their own healthy living children;

● Age from 20 to 36 years;

● Legally certified consent of surrogate’s husband (if any) to participate in the program.

After all documents have been collected and all legal issues have been resolved, an in vitro fertilization procedure is carried out. Biological material (sperm and egg cells) is taken from both or at least from one intended parent and later a fertilization takes place in a test tube. After a certain period of time, embryologists secrete the most viable embryos and “implant” them into the uterus of a surrogate mother. To increase the probability of successful embryo implantation, two embryos are transplanted at once.

The procedure of embryo transfer to the uterus is painless and short ( it lasts about 5 minutes). But before it, the surrogate mother needs to undergo a preparatory hormonal course to ensure the required degree of maturation of the endometrium and one hundred percent embryo acceptance conditions for the embryos’ healthy subsequent development.

The human health is a key element of a dynamic society development. Just something to think about, today 194 countries out of total 195 countries in the world are members of the World Health Organization (WHO). It means that practically all National Health Care Systems are incorporated into a global healthcare network with founding principles that medical services should be professional, affordable, comprehensive, accessible, and patient-centered. The medical centers “Mother and Child” provide specialized medical treatment for different types of infertility to patients worldwide.

The Network of Reproductive Medical Centers “Mother and Child” is proud of having productively cooperated with a number of Board Certified in Internal Medicine Doctors of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Obstetrics, Gynecology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility; members of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), the Ukrainian Association of Reproductive Medicine (UARM), and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) with over 20 years of relevant professional experience, who are capable of effectively leading and advising their subordinates in order to attain an array of primary and secondary objectives during efficient implementation of various surrogacy programs.

  1. I still support that Ukraine is one of the best countries in Europe where surrogacy is legal by law and safe for foreigners.To say the truth Ukraine pleasantly surprised me as I have used services of one local clinic. The third world country, weak state, debilitated economy and collapsing infrastructure. But it can be seen local clinics show rather good results in the sphere of reproductive medicine. Surrogate mothers are carefully checked in accordance with the international requirements. Appropriate price, “all inclusive” programs, and even 100% guarantee. Al these I have found in Ukraine, Feskov Human Reproduction Group, and was really satisfied. Despite this fact Ukraine is a country where majority of Europeans are afraid to go to. However those ones who have visited Ukraine found that it’s a beautiful, civilized country. I saw on own practice it is really country with high rates of success in the field of ART. This country, located in the Eastern Europe, has the most loyal legislation concerning surrogacy. It’s all because of the legality of the procedure and good prices, many Europeans go to Ukrainian clinics. And I understand them as I also took an advantage of surrogate motherhood there)) There is a good point that you don’t need to wait long for a surrogate, Feskov has big database of surrogate and they will help you choose the right one for you.
