Is Anthony Davis the best player in basketball? Thanks to his early solid play this year–which has been nothing short of spectacular–the Chicago-born native is a shoe-in for early MVP consideration.

The third-year big from Kentucky has averaged a sensational 25.2 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.1 blocks a game for the Pelicans. What’s scary about Davis is he isn’t even in the prime of his career.

His impact has been felt on and off the court, as his signature unibrow has become a fixture for Foot Locker commercials and local New Orleans television ads. With growing popularity, it seems the only thing stopping Davis from true superstar status might be himself.

Throughout his short NBA career, Davis has been the victim of a string of bad luck injuries ranging from stress reactions in his ankles, MCL sprains, fractures in his hand, and wrist sprains. In an attempt to avoid the injury plague, Davis bulked up for the 2014-15 season to be able to handle the rigors of the NBA season.

In addition to an increased workout regimen, Davis played on the USA national team where he played an integral role on the USA gold medal squad. For Davis, the inclusion on the team was another achievement the young big man can add to his already solid NBA career.

Davis was named NBA rookie of the year, became an All-Star in just his second NBA season, and since the beginning of the 2013 season Davis has had five games of 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks, no other player has had more than two.

With all the on court success Davis knows he must stay focused and not let expectations get the better of him.

“I just go out there and play,” Davis said “What people expect of me? That’s on them. I don’t pay attention to all the stuff they’re saying because that kind of messes with your head and you start getting complacent.”

It seems Davis might be the best player in the NBA, but don’t expect him to tell you that.
