[dropcap]L[/dropcap]ONDON — On a rainy day in London, it only seemed fitting that Arsenal brought out the heavy artillery in sinking the newly-crowned FA Cup champion Latics from Wigan Athletic, 4-1.

Led by Lukas Podolski’s two goals along with scores from Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey, the Gunners find themselves in place to clinch a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the 16th straight season.

While this is nice—in addition to finishing above Tottenham—the Gunners, in this blogger’s opinion, have bigger fish to fry—and potentially net—during what may be the most critical summer transfer window in the era of Le Professur.

First things first, Arsenal must take care of business on the road against a stubborn lot in Newcastle United, while the Spurs finish out their season at White Hart Lane against Sunderland.

For Arsenal, it’s simple, win and you’re in, and as a bonus, get to celebrate St. Totteringham’s Day for the proverbial umpteenth time at the expense of your hated neighbors, lose and let the wild speculation of Wenger’s job security begin en masse.

Gooners everywhere had better be careful not to be too confident against a Newcastle team that would love nothing better than to shatter Arsenal’s European dreams.

Another incentive for Arsenal if they emerge victorious is that with their new contract with German kit supplier Puma, they can use some of that money—along with the millions already in reserve—to go on a spending binge and secure the signatures of legitimate world-class players such as Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski, Fiorentina’s Stefan Jovetic and Real Madrid’s Gonazlo Higuain, whom they have been linked to.

For the sake of argument, they could even bring back Cesc Fabregas, if they truly desired it.

While this may sound like fantasy soccer on steroids, the reality is there is more at stake awaiting Arsenal on the hallowed pitch of St James then finishing above Tottenham—again—now is the time for the Gunners to seize upon the opportunity to not only finish strong but be in the place to lure quality players to North London as well.
