NFL: Rules and changes being proposed for league meetings

I had an opportunity this week that I would never have imagined. I was a part of a conference call with the NFL. They were previewing some rules changes and other items in advance of the Owners Meetings this week in Arizona.

The conference call opened up with a quick recap of some interesting stats from the previous season. One stat that was brought up that was interesting was how we saw four new teams get into the 2016 NFL Playoffs that were not in there for a while. In fact, they were the Oakland Raiders, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, and the Atlanta Falcons. They also mentioned how we saw roughly 700 yards per game and the average points were 25.4 points per game. Then they started getting into some rule changes that are being proposed at the league meetings in Arizona.

Eliminating the jumper, on field goals, was on of the first proposals. Consequently, the reasoning for removing this from the game is to reduce the potential injuries that could come from players jumping. The NCAA is also pushing this rule. However, the pace of play was the major discussion on the day.

One thing that they want to do is have the refs make the announcement on an instant replay during a TV timeout. It used to be that they would wait until they came back from a television timeout to make the announcement if this gets passed, they won’t do that anymore. Regardless, if they do this, I am hopeful that whoever is calling the game that they are able to bring the TV viewer back into the action.

Several issues were worth discussing during the conference call. However, the one thing I found interesting was that they want to limit overtime games to only ten minutes, instead of fifteen minutes. The league does not expect more ties based on this change. Last year we saw two overtime ties, which ties the record for the most in an NFL season since 1997. Lastly, the Seahawks and Bills proposed that teams are granted more challenges.

It will be interesting to see which of these proposals receive approval at the league meetings.

What changes would you like for the 2017 season? Comment below.

New York Jets: Three round mock draft for 2017 – Do they take a QB?

It seems that the New York Jets are poised for a successful 2017 season. After going 5-11 during the 2016 season, they purged the roster. They would end up cutting ties with several players including Ryan Fitzpatrick, Darrelle Revis, and Nick Mangold. There were people within the New York sports market who were saying that the Jets need to hit a home run and do very well in both free agency and the draft. If I were the Jets GM, I would look to get these players.

Round 1, Pick 6

Malik Hooker (Safety from Ohio State)

I have gone on the record for the last few months in saying that the New York Jets should not go for a QB in this spot. I am aware that guys like Watson will be available here, but I wouldn’t go for any of them. The Jets have too many holes to fill and should look at other positions to fill before they worry about the QB position. In comes Malik Hooker, who has drawn comparisons to former Ravens great Ed Reed. He ranked third in interceptions with seven last season for the Buckeyes and has a lot of speed that could cause problems for receivers in the NFL. The Jets need a playmaker and Hooker can fill that void.

Round 2, Pick 39

Antonio Garcia (Offensive Tackle from Troy)

As the New York Jets have been getting rid of players this offseason, the offensive linemen have taken the biggest hit. The Jets have parted ways with Ryan Clady and Breno Giacomini, two key guys on the offensive line. If Antonio Garcia is still on the board at that point, I would be foolish not to take him if I were the Jets. They need help on that offensive line and Garcia didn’t allow a sack on 900 consecutive snaps while at Troy.

Round 3, Pick 70

Quincy Wilson (Cornerback from Florida State)

The New York Jets lost Darelle Revis in the offseason and Buster Skrine has not played to his full potential since he was drafted. If the Jets were to take Wilson with this pick, they would be taking someone who is proven on the field. He could also help bolster the defense right off the back. In fact. the Jets secondary allowed the fourth most passing touchdowns and came away with the second fewest interceptions. Consequently, both areas could get help with Wilson.

I would like to make one note. Presently, I don’t have the Jets taking a QB in my mock draft for one reason. At this point, heir current QB core is Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg, and Bryce Petty. Yes, that doesn’t scream a successful 2017 season but I don’t know what Hackenberg or Petty are truly like. We did get a small glimpse of Petty in 2016, but nothing that changes my views on this team.

Tomi Lahren temporarily suspended from the Blaze after making comments on the View

We have seen it happen before. People in the media say something on another network. Next, they end up running into problems with their own company. Conservative talk show host Tomi Lahren has had her show temporarily suspended. This came after she made abortion comments on another network.

While she was making an appearance on ABC’s The View, Lahren basically said, “Stay out of my guns, and you can stay out of my body as well.” She was referring to the fact that she thinks that pro-life politics are an example of governmental overreach. Her entire quote was, “I’m someone that is for limited government, so I can’t sit here and be a hypocrite and say I’m for limited government, but I think that the government should decide what women do with their bodies.”

Glen Beck, the owner of the Blaze basically suspended Tomi Lahren for flip-flopping on her abortion stance. This comment caused a ton of heat with her co-workers at the Blaze. Consequently, the Blaze suspended her show. I feel suspending her show was going a bit far. She didn’t do it on their network. However, I see where Glen Beck is coming from. He doesn’t want someone on his network to start flip-flopping on their stances. Once you start flip-flopping on your stances, you tend to lose credibility. Also, people tend to not want to take what you say seriously.

My only issue with this is this is not the first time that someone got suspended or getting fired from their job because of something they said. An example of this happened last year when Anthony Cumia was fired from SiriusXM after he went on a tirade on Twitter. I figure that she will be back doing her show next week and I am expecting her to have a lot to say about this incident.

WWE has interest in buying Ring of Honor and it would benefit the WWE

There have reports circulating that WWE has expressed interest in buying out one of the major wrestling promotions around. Pro Wrestling Sheet was first to break the news, but they are hearing through sources that the WWE has had secret meetings with Sinclair Broadcasting, the parent company of Ring of Honor, for the WWE to buy them out. As the report went on to mention, they are just in the early stages of talks and nothing major is on the horizon.

It should be worth noting that this happened last year as WWE was interesting in purchasing TNA Wrestling. Those deals ended up falling through and nothing came from them. As far as WWE having interest in Ring of Honor, it would mean more content for the Network. If WWE were to acquire the fifteen year old promotion, it mean WWE would have access to all of the Ring of Honor tapes from 2002. This would also mean that the weekly Ring of Honor show would end up being part of the Network. One thing for certain, Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling would no longer be associated if Ring of Honor is sold to the WWE.

However, the big thing that is not known of when this was written is what happens to the Ring of Honor wrestlers. If WWE were to purchase Ring of Honor would they end up getting control of their contracts or would they have a chance to get out of their contracts. Another reason why WWE would do this is that then they could do several DVD’s on current WWE superstars and include their Ring of Honor runs. You have guys like Kevin Owens, Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, and Seth Rollins to name a few who started there careers off in Ring of Honor.

When Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet broke the news Wednesday night, he indicated that the talks are slowly progressing. He never indicated where the two companies currently stand. I would be very interested to see if this does happen for the fact that it would probably change the landscape of wrestling. We will keep you up to date to the on going talks between WWE and Ring of Honor.

ROH: Kenny King is one of the contestants on the upcoming Bachelorette

It is not uncommon for professional wrestlers to do projects outside of the square circle. However, it is not common that the professional wrestling world and “the Bachelor” franchise never cross paths. However, that is about to change as the upcoming season of the Bachelorette. It will feature someone who is a big name in the square circle.

As production is set to begin on the up coming season, creator Mike Fleiss tweeted a shot from behind the scenes. If you look closely at the picture and are a fan of professional wrestling, then there will be one guy in that picture who looks very familiar. Kenny King, who is best known for having runs in TNA and Ring of Honor. Unlike when he is trying to beat another wrestler in the ring, he will be fighting for the love of Rachel Lindsay, the first African- American bachelorette in the show’s history.

If you are not familiar with Kenny King, it is his charisma that fans noticed right away when he hits the screen. Whether it was with the All-Night Express with Rhett Titus, the X- Division champion or his run in the BDC in TNA, or his part in the Rebellion in ROH. He also has background as a Chippendales dancer, so he won’t have a problem finding love.

This also won’t be King’s first run with reality TV. He was apart of WWE’s Tough Enough years ago and it seemed that he was heading towards getting a WWE contract. However, WWE chose to give it to two other people and King would end up going on to the independent scene.

Another name of someone who made it in the professional wrestling landscape and have a run in reality TV is the Miz. Prior to the Miz coming to the WWE, he would appear on the MTV show The Real World. As the saying goes, wrestlers are actors who are playing a role. It won’t be tough for Kenny King on this show that gets started in May.

NBA: The Knicks need to be taken over like MLB took over the Dodgers in 2011

It is safe to say that the New York Knicks are the joke of the NBA. You have an organization that was ranked as the #1 most valuable team on a recent Forbes list but can not have a winning season. In the James Dolan era, the Knicks have only had three winning seasons. It is quite sad to see how a team that was once of the biggest teams in the NBA is now a joke. However, I have an idea on how you can save this organization.

If you recall back in 2011 when Major League baseball took over the Los Angeles Dodgers. They did that because the owners were having a lot of problems and it was causing problems with the team. Now, only a few years later, the Dodgers are one of the better teams in MLB. My plan is for the NBA to take over the Knicks and find new owners for this team. This probably won’t happen because the Knicks make a lot of money for the Dolan family, but enough is enough. Since he took over this team back in the late 1990’s, they have been one of the worst teams in the NBA.

I also feel the Knicks needs to get rid of Phil Jackson as well. Since he was brought into the fold a few years ago, the Knicks have not had a winning season. However, the fans of the Knicks could play into this a bit if they chose to. The way you do that is you stop attending Knicks games. As long as fans keep buying tickets to games, the Dolan family won’t sell the team. You need to hit them hard and hitting them in the pocket is the way to go. Under the leadership of Adam Sliver, the NBA has already done this with the situation that happened with the Los Angeles Clippers.

I am talking as a fan and a journalist. The NBA needs to take over ownership of the Knicks as soon as possible and help find owners who will make this team great to watch again. They should find owners who actually give a crap about winning and doesn’t alienate past players who helped that organization. I want to say that I am proud to be a fan of the New York Knicks, but as long as James Dolan is in charge I am getting more disappointed in this team.

WWE: NXT Takeover would be the ideal spot to debut Alesiter Black

The night before Wrestlemania, the superstars of NXT will take the stage for NXT Takeover: Orlando. I am starting to feel that this is where we will see the debut of Alesiter Black (aka Tommy End). If you have been watching NXT the past couple of weeks, we have been seeing vignettes for Tommy End. The only part that makes it interesting is that there is no date to a debut and that’s why I feel it will be at NXT Takeover.

Since NXT has started doing Takeovers, they have had some major debuts occur. For instance, Takeover Brooklyn of 2016 saw the debut of Ember Moon. Another debut that comes to mind that happened at an NXT Takeover show was when Samoa Joe made his debut confronting then NXT Champion Kevin Owens. Now if you have him debut at Takeover, what should he do? Well, if you look at the most wrestler to debut on NXT in Kassius Ohno he made his on screen debut after NXT Takeover in San Antonio. He would later then make his official debut a few weeks later.

In regards to the debut of Alesiter Black, you can have him debut at NXT Takeover and have him fight Kassius Ohno. I figured since there is no opponent for Ohno at the show and these two stars have had great battles. The one that I can recall was when they had a match at a PWG event and had a match of the night . I figure this would give Tommy End his WWE moment and if they are allowed to show what they can do, it will be a phenomenal match.

I also would like to see these two feud to give them both great work to do. Also people are looking for that next Cesaro/Zayn type of feud that those two stars had a few years back at NXT. In all honesty, I think a feud with Kassius Ohno and Alesiter Black could be close to that. NXT Takeover is April 1st and is being headlined by Bobby Roode and Nakamura for the NXT title.
