Baker Mayfield

Here’s something I know will make Cleveland Browns fans a bit sick to their stomach – the possibility of drafting 2017 Heisman Trophy Winner Baker Mayfield out of Oklahoma.

NFL.com is reporting the Browns hosted the All-American passer while the New York Jets will entertain Josh Allen. There is plenty of intrigue into which of the six possible signal callers could hear their names called on the first night of the NFL Draft.

“In a draft class stocked with quarterback talent, two of the the presumed top four signal-callers are hitting the road for meetings with teams picking in the top three,” writes Nick Shook of NFL.com. “Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield is flying to Cleveland for a two-day visit with the Browns beginning Monday, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.”

For those of you playing at home, I have Mayfield fifth on my list quarterbacks, trailing Darnold, Rosen Allen and Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph.

“As expected, teams are doing their due diligence with potential first-round selections, hosting an assortment of prospects in the weeks leading up to the draft as they attempt to determine where those players land on their draft boards,” added Shook. “It’s a natural and necessary part of the process, and sometimes an essential one that can sway a team one way or another on a specific player.”

The odds on favorite to be the top overall pick, Sam Darnold is a little over three weeks away for hearing his name called by commissioner Roger Goodell. There is an outside shot Allen from Wyoming and UCLA’s Josh Rosen could step into that spot.

The Browns have the first and fourth selection, which could make things interesting should a team like Denver wants to come up from fifth to make a play for Darnold or any of the other top quarterbacks. A team like Miami (11th), Buffalo (12th) or Arizona (15th) could take a peak to see if they have enough juice to move up in the draft order.
