CLEVELAND – After a non-stop whirlwind month of rumors and endless speculation, LeBron James chose redemption.
Four years after leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers at the altar to form the “Big Three” with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, James decided to go back to where it all began—Cleveland.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, James has agreed to a two-year, $42.1 million contract with the Cavaliers. In joining Cleveland, James gets a chance to pursue the impossible task of winning the first sports title in Cleveland since 1964.
As first reported on SI.com, James decided to accept the challenge of coming home and winning a title for title-starved Cleveland. James two-year deal, with the option to opt out after one year, gives the Cavaliers more long-term flexibility as the salary cap is expected to rise in 2016.
Per Windhorst, James is fully committed to Cleveland long-term.
In coming back to his native Ohio, James joins a revamped, younger and more athletic Cavs team where he will form a dynamic one-two punch with two-time All Star point guard, Kyrie Irving in new head coach David Blatt’s up-tempo offense.
Along with Irving, James will also be re-united with old teammate, Anderson Varejao, promising big men in Anthony Bennett, Tristan Thompson and possibly run the wing with top overall pick, Andrew Wiggins—who may be dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Kevin Love.
During his seven-year career in Cleveland, James won two NBA Most Valuable Player awards, was voted to the NBA All-Star game six times, four post-season appearances, including one NBA Finals berth. After infamously defecting to Miami in the summer of 2010, James would go on to win two more MVP’s, two NBA titles and two NBA Finals MVP’s down in South Beach.
That chapter is now over for James, who now returns back to Cleveland a hardened and seasoned champion, hoping to give both a beleaguered, down-trodden and tough luck sports town and a desperate franchise something that he himself seeks—salvation and a championship.
