BREAKING: Sounders Win MLS Cup

In what was an intense match vs a stubborn Toronto F.C. side, ending in a 0-0 finish, the Seattle Sounders won their first-ever MLS Cup.

The two teams took to penalty kicks to determine the winner. The Sounders were able to out-leg the Reds, winning the penalty kick shootout 5-4, despite going 120 minutes without a single shot on goal. With a crowd of over 36,000 watching the action, penalty kicks were a back and forth from both clubs.

Seattle’s goalkeeper, Stefan Frei, was the true hero of the match. In extra time, Frei managed to pull off an incredible stop of an almost certain Jozy Altidore header. Roman Torres sealed the deal for the Sounders, as he squeezed his shot right at the middle of the goal, aiming high, and landing the winning score.

Thanks to the Sounders win, the MLS Cup will stay home in the Pacific Northwest, as Seattle was able to follow last year’s champion in the Portland Timbers, in securing the Cup.

The Seattle Sounders were established in 2007, and finally began play in 2009, as a Major League Soccer expansion team. The team has set numerous records, including attendance, average ticket sales and qualifying for the MLS cup in each of its seven years in existence.

The Sounders have won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup three times in a row, in four consecutive Open Cup final appearances. In 2014, Seattle won their fourth U.S. Open Cup title, defeating Philadelphia 3-1, in extra time. For the first time in franchise history, the Sounders won the Supporters’ Shield over the LA Galaxy in the 2014 regular season.

The club has found several successes over the course of its seven years. And to finally bring home the Major League Soccer Cup just adds to the fact that the Seattle Sounders are true competitors. Beloved by their fans, and respected by their colleagues in MLS, the Sounders are most certainly a top club in the entire organization.
