They say a persons’ home is their castle, and that’s certainly the case with these Royal Residencies which are open to the public to visit.

Buckingham Palace is one of the most famous residencies in the UK and is the administrative headquarters of the British monarchy. People travel from far and wide to visit this royal palace, which was the scene of the official wedding photos of the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge.

Located in Berkshire, Windsor Castle is another popular royal destination for travellers. The oldest of the Queen’s palaces, the castle is the last resting place of Henry VIII. Only a stone’s throw away from London, the castle is open to the public most of the year, and is rumoured to be host to over 25 ghosts.

Another royal tourist hotspot is Holyroodhouse, former home of Mary, Queen of Scots. Built between 1671 and 1678, the palace welcomes visitors all year round, and under 5’s can enter for free. Keep an eye out for the Queen’s Gallery and Garden History Tour.

Balmoral Castle, which has been one of the residencies of the British Royal Family since 1852, is also on our list ofplaces to visit. Privately owned by the Royal family rather than the crown, the castle boasts over 150 buildings on the estate.

Open from April until October, Sandringham House also makes it onto out list of Royal Residencies. Located in Norfolk and occupied by the aristocracy since the Elizabethan era, Sandringham was the birthplace of King George VI has is a popular attraction for tourists.

To round off your trip, don’t forget to visit Clarence House, one of the last remaining aristocratic townhouses in London. Currently the official residence of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, Clarence House is only open to the public in August, so make sure you don’t miss out.
