Short and sweet, The Byline Report will touch upon events with a blurb of facts and information, along with a small percentage of opinion.

Without further ado, here are the news events from Sunday evening, September 29th, that are making headlines:

AMC’s Breaking Bad Finale : For all the hype and critical acclaim that it gets, AMC’s Breaking Bad lives up to it in many ways, thanks to the solid acting of Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn and R. J. Mitte, the much-talked about show took its last bow Sunday evening, much to the dismay of it’s many loyal fans.

Not too worry, BB fans! You will continue to get your fix in the up-coming spinoff, “Better Call Saul

Brian Hoyer Throws Two TD’s in 17-6 Win Over Bengals.  Could it be possible to go from third-string zero to football hero?

In the case of Cleveland Browns quarterback, Brian Hoyer, then the answer is a resounding yes.  Hoyer, a former star at prep powerhouse, Cleveland St. Ignatius, threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns in a 17-6 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Since coming on for the injured Brandon Weeden, Hoyer has thrown for 590 yards, five touchdowns, three interceptions and compiled a QB rating of 86.2 in his two starts.

Another quarterback controversy in Cleveland? The way that Hoyer has been playing lights-out, the closest that Weeden may get to the field is by holding a clipboard at this rate.

And judging by both the fickle way Cleveland goes thru quarterbacks and the inept borderline-bust play of former 22nd overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft in Weeden, it’s Hoyer’s job to lose now.

Lane Kiffin Fired At USC : How does one get fired from one of the most prestigious and storied college football programs in the country. How about alienating your own fans, losing the locker room and losing to the likes of conference doormats Washington State at home and Arizona State on the road. In the case of Lane Kiffin, it wasn’t about being thrown under the bus, it was about getting fired as soon as the team bus comes back into town.

Wow.

Don’t get me wrong, Kiffin is nothing short of a world-class jerk in how he left Tennessee in the middle of the night for USC, but when your own AD in Pat Haden decides your fate during the third quarter of a game that you are coaching, you must have really incurred some bad karma along the way.  Under Kiffin, the Trojans went 28-15 overall and were 3-2 and 0-2 in conference play, was 4-7 in his last 11 games.

Per media reports, recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach Ed Orgeron has been named interim head coach and current Denver Broncos defensive coordinator and former USC linebacker Jack Del Rio is rumored to be the front-runner for the now-vacant USC job.

Aaron Ramsey Fires Arsenal To Top Of EPL Table : Thanks to some solid form, Aaron Ramsey’s eighth goal in all competitions, the Gunners would beat Swansea, 2-1, and coupled with shocking losses by Manchester City, United and a 1-1 draw between Chelsea and Tottenham, vault to the top of the English Premier League table.  Not bad for a team that during the summer transfer window whiffed on high-profile targets such as Gonzalo Higuain, Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez, shocked the soccer world in swooping for Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil, Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer and Matthieu Flamini from AC Milan.

Guess Arsene Wenger does know what he’s doing after all.

Heat Ink Mike Spoelstra To New Multi-Year Extension : Life is good if you’re Miami Heat head coach Mike Spoelstra.  I mean you get to “coach” perhaps the greatest basketball player of this social-media generation in LeBron James, a proven assassin in Dwyane Wade and the best third wheel in NBA history in Chris Bosh, you have hip-hop celebrities such as Drake and Kayne West sitting courtside AND you get the nightlife and beauty of South Beach.

Oh, and two NBA rings in the process.

Like I said, it must be good to be Spoelstra, who signed a new multi-year extension with the back-to-back defending champs. In five seasons as head coach, Spoelstra is 260-134 and 50-29 in the post-season including leading the Heat to three straight NBA Finals appearances.

News & Notes : Indians Lock Up Top Wild Card Spot, Face Winner of Rays/Rangers : Thanks to a 21-6 mark in September, the Cleveland Indians locked up the top wild card slot in defeating the Minnesota Twins, 5-1 and clinch their first post-season appearance since 2007, and will face the winner of the Tampa Bay Rays/Texas Rangers in a one-game play-in tiebreaker on Monday, with the winner to play the Indians Wednesday in Cleveland, and the winner of the Rays/Rangers-Indians would face the top-seeded Boston Red Sox, Friday at Fenway.  Marlins Henderson Alvarez No-Hits Tigers on Walk-Off. Thanks to a wild pitch, Miami Marlins right-hander Henderson Alvarez threw his first career no-hitter—courtesy of a pass ball in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Detroit Tigers, 1-0. Dodgers OF Matt Kemp Out For Postseason : Just when it appeared that the Dodgers would be back at full strength in time for the playoffs, they would end up losing a key part in slugger Matt Kemp due to an ankle and shoulder injury. Appearing in just 73 games, Kemp hit .270 with six home runs and 33 RBI’s in 73 games, with an on-base percentage of .328 Seahawks DE Michael Bennett Suffers Lower Back Injury vs. Texans : During their ugly 23-20 comeback overtime win against the Texans on the road, Seattle would pay a small price. Defensive end Michael Bennett suffered a horrific lower back injury after snapping his neck awkwardly when his helmet hit the hip of Texans quarterback Matthew Schaub, who was tackled into him. After laying on the field , he would be carted off and has since been reported as okay with movement in all of his lower extremities. Going into the game, Bennett led the Seahawks in sacks (2.5) and recorded seven tackles.
