INSCMagazine: Get Social!

Marvel and Netflix seem to be a match made in heaven. While the shows have their faults, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist have been some of the most watched shows from the streaming juggernaut. So it only makes sense to tie them all together, right?

The Netflix shows seemed to be building towards The Defenders the same way the MCU has been building towards Infinity War. The shows themselves have seemed like prequels to the most bad ass superhero team up since the original Avengers film. Each show and character have their own personality about them. They all feel the same yet represent something different. However, with the anti hero persona that each character portrays, they’re closer to Guardians of the Galaxy than Avengers.

One of the biggest drawbacks to The Defenders trailer seen above is it doesn’t hint towards any plot details. Other than they all have to come together, there isn’t much more to go off of. Sure, they drop a few hints here or there, but they’ll have to rely on the audiences love for the characters they’ve built for day 1 streaming. From then on out it will all be word-of-mouth to get the ball rolling on the rest of their intended viewers.

Luckily for them, they’ve created characters that people have loved. Daredevil was one of the most talked about shows upon its initial release, even after skeptics thought to compare it to the movie. Jessica Jones was a psychological thriller proving no one, no matter how powerful, should have control over you. Luke Cage was a war on geopolitical politics and standing up for your community. Iron Fist was a throw back to older kung-fu movies and respecting the legacy we leave behind. Each show built upon who the heroes are and what they’re capable of with their backs against the wall.

The real question is, with how each show stood on its own, can they mash them all together and create a new direction for the team up. The Defenders has all the right tools to be the next big Netflix hit but will too much of a good thing hurt their chances of success? Can the dynamic both build a new story while advancing the stories of each character individually? With The Defenders, it will be much harder as Netflix opts for half the episodes as most network television shows. With a new season being announced for each of the four characters, we’ll have to wait and see if it will be a success or seem like a stall waiting for the next season. The Defenders airs all episodes on Netflix August 18th.
