The Cleveland Browns have agreed to a deal with quarterback Jason Campbell, according to multiple sources.
The contract is a two-year deal and financial terms are currently undisclosed.
Campbell is expected to backup second-year quarterback Brandon Weeden in Cleveland.
Weeden had an inconsistent season for Cleveland in his rookie season, throwing for 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions which gave the former Oklahoma State Cowboys a 72.6 quarterback rating on the year.
Throughout the offseason, rumors have circulated that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam would acquire another quarterback to begin a competition for the starting job during training camp — and it looks like Campbell is that quarterback.
Campbell has been a solid quarterback throughout his eight-year NFL career, as he has a 68/46 touchdown to interception ratio and a 60.8 completion percentage to his credit.
Said Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski in a statement, “Jason is an established leader who has started a number of games in this league and has had success. He brings us a veteran presence and a good set of physical tools. He played in a similar system when he was in Oakland and that will help in his transition.”
Weeden, on the other hand, is now in a particularly vulnerable position with a new head coach, new ownership, and another quarterback to contend with.
Cleveland may be looking to go in a different direction with their signing of Campbell, although if Weeden remains the starter this season, Campbell will at least provide good quarterback depth for the Browns, in case anything goes wrong with Weeden under center.
