The Indianapolis Colts are expected by many to select Dalvin Cook if he falls to them in the upcoming draft. And why shouldn’t they? This is a player that has fantastic potential and is a well-rounded running back. Cook has great vision, is a solid pass-catcher out of the backfield, NFL caliber speed, and is decent at pass protection. Another important asset that Cook has is that he loves the game. His work ethic and commitment to becoming a better player is something that coaches can’t really teach. These are all things that make it incredibly difficult for any team to pass up when it comes to finding their feature running back. So some would say, “why in the world would you pass up a player like that if you’re the Colts?”.

Indianapolis is currently depending on Frank Gore who will be 34 years old by the time next season starts. This should make it clear to many that it is time to find the running back of the future. This year’s NFL draft is probably is one of the best running back classes we’ve seen in the last decade. Dalvin Cook would be a great addition and help give Andrew Luck a very talented weapon out of the backfield. In Dalvin Cook’s last two seasons with Florida State, he ran for 3,456 yards, 38 touchdowns, and averaged 6.68 yards per carry. All of these numbers make him worthy of a first-round selection. Which he almost certainly will be. But he shouldn’t be for the Colts.

The Colts have so many needs at other crucial positions like defensive end, defensive tackle, cornerback, inside linebacker, outside linebacker, right tackle, and right guard. All of these needs must be addressed before running back. Also, there will still be great options available in later rounds that could be featured running backs for Indianapolis. Players like Samaje Perine, Alvin Kamara, Joe Mixon, Kareem Hunt, etc. The Colts need to commit to helping their franchise quarterback by building a legitimate offensive line and defense. These are things the Colts have been missing since Luck was drafted in 2012.

This is the year where the Colts have to start focusing on needs rather than wants. Linebacker and offensive line should be the top priority when it comes to their first round selection. There are too many talented running backs that the Colts could get in either free agency or in the later rounds of the draft. They are close to being super bowl contenders again but they must get this offseason right when it comes to free agency and the draft. Dalvin Cook is a phenomenal player but without consistency from the defense and offensive line, the Colts will continue to struggle.
