Dallas Cowboys Draft

The Dallas Cowboys were the surprise team in 2016. They went from slums of the NFL to the cream of the crop. All of this without their “star” QB Tony Romo. Can this happen again in 2017? The offseason has not started out right for the Cowboys. They have lost a few players to free agency and retirement. The 2017 NFL Draft just over a month away. I have put together a Dallas Cowboys three-round mock draft for your entertainment.

Round 1 Pick 28

Teez Tabor – Cornerback (Florida) 6’0” 199lbs

With the recent loss of two cornerbacks, Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr, Tabor has become a need. He was a freshman All-American. Tabor had four INTs his sophomore year. He took two of those back for TDs. Teez Tabor formed one of the best cornerback duos at The University of Florida with Quincy Wilson.

Tabor is your prototypical athlete. He has great size and speed. He has tremendous hand-eye coordination. This allows him to turn pass attempts into interceptions. He finished with nine INTs at The University of Florida. He is also not afraid to stick his nose in and break up the ball.

Teez Tabor’s weakness may be the deep route. He does not cover it well. He often gives too much cushion on the deep route. Tabor also has tendencies to sit and grab receivers. He needs to work on his hip rotation.

He has the tendencies to be a first-round CB. However, some of his lazy tendencies may turn off CB needy teams. He is a pure cover corner. Similarly, do not expect him to be solid in run support.

Round 2 Pick 60

Dan Feeney – Guard (Indiana) 6’4” 305lbs

Feeney was on an NFL Draft watch status after his junior year at Indiana. However, he decided to return for his senior season. Moreover, at times he would even transition out to tackle. This shows that he has some versatility as well.

Feeney is a quality zone blocker which is what the Dallas Cowboys like to run. He has a wonderful ability to pull and be a lead blocker outside as well. Feeney is very patient in the run game. He rarely commits to a block early.  Feeney also a high ability in the screen game.

His weakness is his lower body strength. As the scouts put it “he needs sand in his pants.” That being said, he is unable to get a push when running straight ahead. Thus the reason he is a quality zone guy.

Round 3 Pick 92

Obi Melifonwu – S (Connecticut) 6’4” 224lbs

The Dallas lost two safeties in free agency in Barry Church and JJ Wilcox. For this reason, this has now become a position of need. Melifonwu is a player that could come in and take one of those spots.

Obi Melifonwu was a four-year starter for the Huskies. In fact, in 2016 he was an all-conference player and led the team in tackles. He also had 118 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. In addition to being a tackling machine, he also led the team with 4 INTs.

Melifonwu has tremendous ball skills. He is a converted CB. As a result, he can cover in the slot. Therefore, he matches up well with larger TEs. In addition, his pads are placed all over the field. Aside from his ball skills, he is a tremendous player sideline to sideline.

His weakness may be his size. For instance, his legs are very long and when asked to turn and run they get in the way. Consequently, this can cause him to be late on some routes. Although he has solid ball skills, his eyes can deceive him. In fact, he often has to rely on speed when getting over on deep routes. Ultimately he has to “see” the ball before making a play.

The Dallas Cowboys could have a tough go of it in 2017. It is not always easy to repeat the previous year’s performance. Especially after your team has been depleted by free agency and retirement. All things considered, it will all come down to the draft. In other words, how will Jerry Jones play his cards?

    1. You are probably right. However, there is a chance that Jerry moves up. you never know how he is feeling..lol. I am not saying he moves up to grab Melifonwu but if he is there, why not?
