Avengers: Age of Ultron is now out of the can and has been playing in theaters nationwide the last couple of weeks. However, there is no rest for the wicked, and many of cast members have assembled this month for shooting on Captain America:Civil War.

According to a report from Heroic Headlines, there is a scene scheduled to be filmed on May 12th, referred to as “a funeral scene”. The scene will be shot in downtown Atlanta, Georgia and there is a casting call looking for extras who are being asked to wear “formal, solid black attire for the event”.  It is also reported that dreary conditions, including cloudy skies and thunderstorms, will add the perfect touch for a “sullen, grim funeral.”

Such news concerning the film’s production could have the minds of Avengers fans, and more specifically fans of Captain America, completely reeling from the possible implications.

Those who have read the comics are bound to zero in on Cap’s assassination and subsequent funeral. This would likely lead to The Winter Soldier donning the stars and stripes as the new Captain America.

There has already been a great deal of speculation as to the future of Cap in the films, and whether Sebastian Stan would pick up where Chris Evans left off. It just so happens that Stan has a nine picture deal, where Evans only has a six picture deal. One thing those who have pondered this scenario must remember is the fact that Civil War will be Evans’ fifth movie of his contractual six. Of course his obligation may only extend to appearing in some sort of flashback scenes in a future film.

Evans seemed prepared for the possibility that his incarnation of Cap could meet his end when he said, “I’m sure it’ll happen at some point, all good things have to come to an end. But I’m really happy playing the character.”

This may be the inevitable tragic end of “The First Avenger”, but then again it could be a tragic end for another character or even characters who may or may not be costumed heroes. Since it is only one movie, Marvel may not have time to develop the story in cinematic form without some editorial liberties. Thus, making it possible that this is not even Cap’s funeral…yet

Captain America: Civil War is currently in production and has a theatrical release date of May 6, 2016. So unless there are some major spoilers released before filming and post are complete, we’ll all have to wait a year to find out whose funeral it is.

  1. There’s only one problem. He still has one more movie on his contract, so unless they want to use him in flashbacks, it’s gonna be hard to kill him and then explain oh wait he’s not dead!
