It’s official! Phase 3 of Marvel’s master plan has been revealed. While I think everyone was expecting Captain America: Civil War and Thor: Ragnarok nobody could have predicted it’s biggest secret, Captain Marvel.

This writer is not the biggest fan of this female heroine, but the decision to use a female lead in a superhero movie hasn’t been done since the Jennifer Garner box-office bomb, Elektra.

However, it’s Elektra that is casting doubt in my mind about Captain Marvel.  The film didn’t do entirely well at the box-office, and was a colossal flop for Fox.

Although, Disney—unlike Fox—has had a track record of taking risks with their comic book entities, and they aren’t afraid to introduce new, enticing characters such as Groot, Rocket Raccoon and Ant-Man,  that is the reason Elektra failed.

The movie came at a time when taking risks on comic-book films wasn’t the norm. With the genre growing so much over the last few years, why not bring in a new audience, and further expand your products a bit further.

Not only has Disney decided to go with Carol Danvers as a lead character, but Marvel has introduced a female version of Thor in their comics, further expanding the role of women in a world once dominated by their male counterparts.

In addition to Marvel, DC  Studios also has plans to introduce a female lead for the upcoming film schedule.  Wonder Woman will debut during Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and will also be receiving its own solo film in 2017.

Whatever the case, the notion that women can’t draw in the comic-book world will be put to the test, but let’s hope it fares better than Elektra.
