With the start of fall comes a new season of television entertainment. While there is certainly a plethora of new shows hoping to engage viewer’s interests, none have had the amount of attention as Fox’s new drama, Gotham.

Gotham, which focuses on the early career of the city’s future police commissioner, Jim Gordon, played by Benjamin McKenzie, is being billed as an origin story for some of DC’s biggest villains and vigilantes.

Throughout the course of the series, viewers can expect to see the likes of the Riddler, Catwoman and the Penguin. Because the series is not based on any set comic, the writing team will have some leeway to introduce these notable villains in very interesting and fresh ways, unlike what avid comic-book readers are familiar with.

Fans expecting to see the Joker, may wish to practice patience, as the show has big plans for his debut later on in the series.

While “The Clown Prince of Crime” will be making his way onto the show, it will not be during season one. Instead, the characteristics of Gotham’s most feared vigilante will be portrayed by several different actors, all of whom share some of the notable traits and characteristics.

The hope is that his true identity will be revealed at the end of the season, and according to series show-runner, Bruno Heller, the writers will take a cautious approach to his introduction.

“We’re going to wait and get the show up and running [before we meet the real Joker]. We want to get the story right and we want to be totally right – and then we’ll start thinking about how to bring him in. We will certainly try to surprise people, and maybe even trick people. It’s one of those expectations that everyone will be waiting for, so you can’t just present the guy with a big smile and start telling the story. Not that would be dull, but that’s one of those opportunities to really start playing with this”

While it is apparent the show’s villains will be front and center, what is not apparent is what is going to be done with Bruce Wayne. Since the show serves as a prequel, we will be introduced to an adolescent Wayne soon after his family had been murdered.

Wayne is taken in by Gordon, and his role on the show’s first season will be focused on the relationship the two form, and not the growth of Wayne into Batman. While the show has a lot of potential, the absence of a real Batman makes the show a huge gamble for Fox.

That hasn’t prevented video services from getting in on the action.

Despite the risk associated with the show, Netflix has already reached a deal to be the exclusive streaming service for Gotham. The deal is expected to be worth $1.75 million, and the shows will premiere at the beginning of the shows (hopefully) second season in September of 2015.

Gotham has all the makings of a top-rated show, and for the first few weeks it will assuredly deliver high ratings. The show needs to be able to develop good content and stories to keep viewers coming back.

With an empire as big as Batman that shouldn’t be much of a problem for the foreseeable future.
