If you weren’t hip to Meghan Trainor before, it might be time to take notice, as the 21-year-old “All About That Bass” songstress, is here to stay.
Like many musician’s Trainor got her start at a young age, writing songs at the age of 11. She was a member of her High School’s local jazz band, and even produced a self-titled album at the age of 15. It wasn’t until Trainor attended the Berklee College of Music–located in her hometown of Boston–where she found major success.
While at Berklee, Trainor was able to release two acoustic albums, I’ll Sing with You and Only 17. It wasn’t long before the record labels came calling, and her second acoustic album, Only 17, earned Trainor a song writing deal with Big Yellow Dog Records.
Trainor was ready to make it big, and in February 2014 Trainor was able to get the attention of Epic Records executive (and former X-Factor judge) L.A. Reid. It was on June 30, 2014 when “All About That Bass” was released. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks, and was applauded for its message that big women are not only beautiful, but sexy.
With All About That Bass–and Lips Are Moving–proving to be huge hits, the anticipation for Trainor’s first album “Title” was through the roof, but thankfully the wait was worth it. Title is not your typical bubblegum pop album, as there are elements of soul, R&B, and jazz–and little bit of sexual innuendo–all blended into 32 minutes of music.
While both All About That Bass and Lips are Moving are featured on the album, it’s Trainor’s other songs that really shine through. The best song of the bunch is “Title”, a fun upbeat song that deals with a woman’s need to be in a committed relationship. The album also features a guest appearance by John Legend on the track “Like I’m Gonna Lose You”
With a top album and numerous award wins and nominations, Meghan Trainor is indeed the hottest thing in music. So, go ahead and get hip, because Trainor plans on being around for a long time.
