Remakes, reboots, do-overs, or whatever you want to call them – like them or not they’ve become a mainstay in the realm of cinema, and even classics are not exempt from eventually being “re-imagined”. One of the latest subjects or victims (depending on your view of this practice )is James Cameron’s 1984 sci-fi classic, The Terminator.

Terminator: Genisys is to be the first of three installments in a brand new Terminator franchise which looks to be redirecting the course of the story in a very different direction than the one we know.

Last week, Entertainment Weekly released their magazine with two different collector covers that give its readers their first look at some of the lead characters. They also published an article that confirmed rumors and contained spoilers about the plot, that describe a significant change from the original story line.

I have chosen not to include the plot spoilers myself, but am allowing you, the reader, to make your own choice whether or not to follow the link above.

Regardless of whether the characters names are the same, if we see an old familiar face, or if many of the plot points remain similar – any changes made are bound to radically redirect the narrative. Whether that is for better or worse remains to be seen.

The cast will feature Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as the future mother of the resistance, Sarah Connor. Also starring is Jai Courtney (Divergent) who takes on the role of Kyle Reese, who is sent from the future to ensure that Sarah will live long enough to fulfill her destiny.

Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) steps in to emulate the leader of the resistance, John Connor. Matt Smith (Doctor Who) is something of a mystery having been cast in a role for a character that has not yet been given and identity.

Appearing in one of the most iconic roles, a relative unknown named Aaron Williamson will be hunting humans (at least one in particular) as the Cyberdine Systems Series T-800 Model 101 Cyborg. Even Arnold Schwarzenengger, the ORIGINAL Terminator, will be appearing in this film as an aged version of the cyborg.

On July 1st 2015, Terminator: Genisys will be stepping off of the assembly line and into theaters. The second installment of the trilogy will be in theaters May 19th of 2107 and the third installment on June 29th of 2018.

I always caution movie goers to treat release dates, especially those given well before the movies are even finished, as being tentative – especially since they may well be.

I am not a big fan of the idea of remaking or rebooting movies in general, particularly those with cult or classic status. Yet in some cases I actually have come to appreciate how some filmmakers can try to expand on an already existing story, close bothersome plot holes in the original incarnation of a movie, or improve on the a movie previously faced with technical limitations.

Judging by what I’ve read, this new Terminator series is not going to be a typical rehashing of the past story simply labeled as a “series reboot”.
