When looking at the multiple candidates the Indianapolis Colts have requested to interview to become their new GM. There is one name that sticks out as to who should be the front runner. Eric DeCosta, who is the assistant general manager to Ozzie Newsome. Newsome is possibly one of the best GM’s in football. So it’s safe to say that DeCosta has had a fantastic mentor during his 18 years with the Baltimore Ravens. The question is, why should he be the Colts number 1 candidate?

There are many intriguing options available for the Colts to consider. One major challenge is finding a GM who can come in and quickly build chemistry with the front office and coaching staff. As most of you probably know, Pagano was a defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens in 2011. So Pagano and DeCosta have history along with chemistry right from the beginning. This is a huge factor when considering that Pagano and Grigson had a psychologist brought in before the start of last season to help improve their relationship.

DeCosta has proven himself to be able to recognize talent and knowing who to bring in to improve a football team. While he was scouting director, the Ravens selected players such as Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata, Ray Rice, Sam Koch, Ben Grubbs, Leron McClain, Marshal Yanda, and Joe Flacco. All of which have been pro bowlers. There is no debate that the man simply knows how to spot talent. But can he do it quickly to help make the Indianapolis Colts super bowl contenders again? His past achievements are quite impressive and have many believing that he and Pagano could do great things with the weak Colts defense.

The Colts desperately need to improve on defense, especially at both inside and outside linebacker. Eric DeCosta is the type of GM that would make it possible for them to do that quickly. The Colts have Andrew Luck and are missing perhaps one piece that would solidify their offensive line and only improve the 8th ranked total offense from 2016.  A coach and general manager being on the same page make a huge difference when it comes to rapidly making a team better. With DeCosta’s ability to spot offensive line talent and defensive talent, the Colts could really take a huge step with DeCosta and Pagano leading the way into the 2017 season.
