LONDON – That didn’t take long. Thanks for a brace from Robin van Persie, new Manchester United boss David Moyes secured his first trophy in a 2-0 FA Community Shield win over Wigan.
Moyes, who would replace fellow Scotsman, Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford after leaving Merseyside club, Everton, looks to be off to a good start in following in the footsteps of the living soccer legend.
Coupled with the pressure of succeeding Ferguson, Moyes has also had to deal with off-the-pitch discord in disgruntled United striker, Wayne Rooney, who appears set for a move to Stanford Bridge and perennial United nemesis, Jose Mourinho.
With derby rival Manchester City landed strikers Stevan Jovetic, Fernandinho , Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negrado and Tottenham landed Roberto Soldado and Paulinho, and it seems that Moyes stands to have his hands full as his rivals have only bolstered themselves during the transfer window.
While the ever petulant and penny-pinching Gunners(Yaya Sanogo on a freebie doesn’t count!) are still in pursuit of Liverpool’s striker Luis Suarez, after their failed attempt—and epic whiff—on new Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain, Reds owner John Henry would publicly rebuff the Gunners €40,000,001 bid for the Uruguayan striker, have now reportedly set their sights on Bayern’s Brazilian midfielder Luis Gustavo instead.
For now, all that matters to Moyes is his first silverware as United boss, thanks to the heroics of van Persie.
van Persie, acquired from Arsenal last year, scored in the sixth and 69th minute, with the first goal coming from a left-wing cross from Frenchman Patrice Evra and the second off of Wigan’s James Perch via a Danny Welbeck pass.
With his first trophy, Moyes can now concentrate on guiding the defending English champions to their 21st EPL banner, while at the same time forging his own path to glory and not be trapped in Ferguson’s ever-looming shadow at Old Trafford.
