The Frisco RoughRiders, Double-A affiliate to the Texas Rangers, are making headlines within the Texas League. Pitchers Collin Wiles and Yohander Mendez have been named Texas League Co-Pitchers of the Week. The Texas League announced their weekly awards winners Monday. The pair earned the award after both pitchers had outstanding performances this past Saturday.

In last Saturday’s double-header against the Arkansas Travelers, affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, Yohander Mendez looked elite. The 22-year-old lefty tossed a complete game shutout in the first matchup of the day. He tossed 7.0 innings of three-hit ball. The RoughRiders pitcher walked one, and had five strikeouts. Mendez finished the day with 92 pitches, 63 for strikes. Mendez didn’t allow anything more than a single throughout the entire game. The win improved him to 3-3 on the season.

In the second game of that double-header, Collin Wiles stunned Frisco RoughRiders fans. He tossed his own complete game shutout. Wiles allowed just one hit and one walk in his outstanding performance. The 22-year-old right-hander got the job done in just 81 pitches, 57 for strikes. The first inning was the most troublesome for Wiles. He gave up a double, and walked one. A ground out, fly out, and a strikeout ended the inning. He fell into a solid groove afterwards, allowing just one more hit for the rest of the game.

Between the two RoughRiders pitchers, the performance was the first consecutive shutout win scenario for Frisco.

This is the second time Mendez has earned a Minor League Baseball weekly award. For 22-year-old Collin Wiles, it is his first. RoughRiders infielder/outfielder Royce Bolinger accompanied the duo, winning Texas League Player of the Week. This is the first week that the Frisco RoughRiders have had a player earn a weekly award so far this season.

The Frisco RoughRiders begin an eight-game away stretch, beginning Tuesday. Collin Wiles and Yohander Mendez will both make an appearance during that stretch. Be on the lookout for these two to keep handling business.
