It seems Kanye West’s return to Twitter has not been as short-lived as some may have thought—or maybe hoped—it would be. While West’s off-the-wall Twitter rants are nothing out of the ordinary, his recent tweets have left some people in shock.
Earlier this week, West showed his support for President Trump in a tweet that read, “You don’t have to agree with trump but the mob can’t make me not love him. We are both dragon energy. He is my brother. I love everyone. I don’t agree with everything anyone does. That’s what makes us individuals. And we have the right to independent thought.” The right to independent thought? I guess his right to independent thought was muffled when wife, Kim Kardashian West, called him in disapproval and demanded he tone down his support for the president. West tweets, “my wife just called me and she wanted me to make this clear to everyone. I don’t agree with everything Trump does. I don’t agree 100% with anyone but myself.”
Many speculated West would lose millions of fans and followers as a result of his recent Twitter activity. In fact, Eagles’ Chris Long has called for a boycott of everything Kanye because of his proclaimed support for the president. As far as West’s followers, he definitely has not lost any, but instead has been gaining. Since his controversial Trump supporting tweet, West’s Twitter following has jumped from 27.9 to 28.3 million—and still climbing. Comparing this to Long’s 543k followers, it appears he may need to get his head in the Twitter game before calling out for boycotts.
While West has received some negative reactions and backlash from friends and family, he doesn’t seem to be backing down any time soon. West shared a screenshot of a text message he received from singer/songwriter and close friend, John Legend. In the text message Legend urges West to reconsider his endorsement, stating, “So many people who love you feel so betrayed right now because they know the harm that Trump’s policies cause, to people of color. Don’t let this be part of your legacy. You’re the greatest artist of our generation.”
Although West has great respect for Legend, he stood his ground and fired back, “I love you John and I appreciate your thoughts. You bringing up my friends or my legacy is a tactic based on fear used to manipulate my free thought.”
Now because Yeezy has also announced the releases of his new album coming June 1, and a collaboration with Kid Cudi on June 8, one has to wonder if his recent Twitter campaign is no more than a marketing strategy. Or perhaps this is his way of gearing up for his intended 2024 presidential candidacy run, which he also confirmed this week while proudly sporting his autographed “Make America Great Again” hat. Whatever West’s motives may be, they are proving to be working in his favor.
