When it comes to running back situations there are not many worse than that of the Green Bay Packers. A few years ago, they had one of the best running games in the league. At that time, they had RB Eddie Lacy leading the way. However, he decided he wanted to lead the way to Golden Corral. That allowed Ty Montgomery to step in. He led the ground game in 2016. Is he enough in 2017? The Packers may not think so. According to reports, the Green Bay Packers have contacted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers regarding RB Doug Martin. Is Martin available in trade talks? Many around the league believe he could be.

Doug Martin may not be sitting well inside the Bucs organization. At the end of 2016, the league suspended him four games for PEDs. He still has to serve three of those games to begin 2017.

Also making this move a little easier is the guaranteed money. Tampa Bay no longer has to the guarantee on Martin’s contract due to the suspension. This makes a trade a little more likely.

The Green Bay Packers have reportedly gone as far as saying, “name your price.” They may be willing to part with a little more than normal for a back the caliber of Doug Martin. Why? Well getting a running back and solidifying a running game just improves their offense. It also allows star QB a little more protection. This was something that he valued during the years that Eddie Lacy was leading the way.

If the Bucs do want to part with Martin and the Packers are willing to wait for the three games this could be a match made in heaven. The move would immediately place Green Bay into contender status in the NFC. They may already be there, in a sense, but this would place them in the serious status.

The Green Bay Packers need to make this move. They need to be able to protect their franchise. While their current running back situation in not dire, this completes their offense. Ted Thompson needs to sweeten the pot a little. If he does, the Buccaneers may just bite.

  1. This would be a cost with not much upside. Ty Montgomery was an RB in High School. He was the leading return man in college. He is not a WR trying to be a RB. He is a RB that can receive out of the backfield. I don’t see it happening. ~M

    1. The possibilities are probably slim. However, for the right price, it could be a solid move. I do not think the Packers brass is sold on three backs they took in the draft. Couple Martin with the speed of Ty Montgomery and you have yourself a very formidable backfield. Thank you for reading.
