Hip-Hop: How real is this Kanye West and Jay-Z beef?

Here we go again with Kanye West being caught in his feelings towards mentor and friend Jay-Z. Wednesday night at a concert in Seattle Kanye tore into Jay about him, not appearing on a track with Drake due to behind the scenes issues. Kanye went on to say:

“Jay thought of a couple lines,” he explained. “I said, ‘Man, just go ahead and throw that on there. They’ll be so surprised. He probably wouldn’t expect you to be on there.’ And [Drake] was like, ‘Oh s**t, The Throne is on this s**t!’ Then Jay thought about it and, out of respect for Meek Mill, he ain’t want to be on the track. And I said, ‘Look, I’ll call Drake, I’ll call Meek, I’ll call y’all… We gotta let people have this song!’ But then it went out of that territory and it went into some Tidal s**t, some political s**t, some s**t about percentages on songs.

At first, it was said to be because of the Meek Mill and Drake beef then it was over the war between Tidal and Apple. To be clear, I’m not siding with Jay or Kanye but I can understand both points.

Jay is Meek’s manager is a sense as he is signed under Roc Nation management and with Meek and Drake going at it there was a level of respect that must be taken. This is the same approach that 50 took with anyone that decided to get on a song with Ja Rule when they had their falling out. Hip-Hop is still based off street rules and by Jay putting a verse on Drake’s song that would be a violation of sorts.

But, this was his brother Kanye asking for a favor and out of respect maybe Jay could have reached out to Meek and seen if he was okay with what Yeezy was asking. The issue if this being between Tidal and Apple also makes sense as well. Jay is the owner of Tidal and while Drake started to go that route he backed out and decided to be with Apple. So, maybe the non-verse was more of an F*** you for doing that to me and my company.

Kanye also spoke about how Jay only reached out by phone when news broke that his wife Kim Kardashian was robbed while in Paris. He then went on to say this about the situation and their kids:

I can’t take this s**t, bro! Our kids ain’t never even played together. Run that s**t.”

“Don’t call me, after the robbery, and say, ‘How you feelin’?’” he yelled out. “You wanna know how I’m feelin’? Come by the house.”

Now, Kanye is so pissed that he announced that there will not be a Watch The Throne 2. Personally, I had no idea there were even talks of such an album. While Hip-Hop is based and thrives of beef, this is not one the game nor Jay and Kanye needs. Their relationship has always seemed to be more than music but over the years you could sense that there were deeper issues pulling them apart.

“Let me tell y’all something,” Kanye told the crowd. “There will never be a Watch the Throne 2. You know why? Because that’s the reason why I wasn’t on the song [“Pop Style”]. I wasn’t on the song because of Hov. Because of some Tidal/Apple bulls**t. This shit get me tight every time I perform this motherf**ker.”

When most rappers get into a beef, more than likely it’s a marketing plan to seek record sales and with Jay being Jay and Yeezy being himself a beef will only benefit Kanye now. In a war or words, there will be no contest but if Yeezy is looking to get his name mentioned, he must be careful on who he chooses to put him on blast.

Kanye is more tabloid than Hip-Hop at the moment and Jay is more business person than music focused, but if he feels a threat coming his way, Kanye may not be willing to deal with the overall onslaught that will be launched.

With all that said, the two friends need to get together and squash this as it will hurt the Hip-Hop community more if they cannot come together and mend their personal and professional relationship.

But hey, this is not the first time Kanye has taken a shot at Jay publicly. Although Jay has never responded, if Kanye keeps pushing he may just have to take the gloves off and dead this situation once and for all.
