There is only so much to expect from a defense that was the best overall last year, that was top 5 against the pass, and that was top 12 against the rush. Moreover, it is only to improve. The Houston Texans defense has arguably one of the best defensive lines in the NFL at this moment.  They also come with some solid, productive linebackers. The only thing that was somewhat questionable was their secondary. However, they only needed to improve on tackling and not ball skills. Overall, this defense just needs to stay status quo for a return to the playoffs.

The Houston Texans made one draft improvement on defense in a draft that primarily focused on their offense. Nevertheless, in the second round, the Texans drafted Zach Cunningham, the linebacker from The University of Vanderbilt, who had over 100 tackles per season. This only adds more depth to the Texans linebacker corps. This will also help with the impending end of Brian Cushing. However, with this depth, he will be able to sit and learn. After a year of having a healthy Jadeveon Clowney and seeing what he can offer, there are high expectations for him to stay healthy with JJ Watt and Vince Wilfork to have an amazing defensive line. The secondary also is improving since, after a year of experience under their belt, the passing defense can only improve from last season.

There is not a lot to expect towards this year’s Houston Texans defense, except improving into a top five defense in all categories. This will majorly rely on the health of the defense and making sure, they communicate effectively and efficiently. The Houston Texans defense will, once again, be the reason why they will win the AFC South and make a deep run into the playoffs this year.
