There are many teams going into this year’s offseason in desperate need of an upgrade at the quarterback position. The Houston Texans are one who must make drastic improvement after a horrendous season from Brock Osweiler. The question is how they find their man and who should be the top choice? There are some players that may become available in free agency that the Texans could possibly consider. But, the one player that should be there leading option is Jimmy Garoppolo from the super bowl champion New England Patriots.

Jimmy G showed that he has the capability to be a legitimate quarterback in this league. The third-year player out of Eastern Illinois played extremely well during Tom Brady’s four-game suspension. He started the season for the Patriots during a time where everyone was questioning whether the Patriots could win without Brady. That was all silenced after seeing Garoppolo go into Arizona and completing 72% of his passes, along with 264 passing yards, and no interceptions. What’s even more impressive is that Garoppolo still has yet to throw a single interception in his career.

Now some pessimists are saying, “how many times have we seen players look fantastic while on the Patriots but once they leave, they fall apart?”. That may be true to some extent when looking back at players like Ryan Mallet and Matt Cassell. But, there is one MAJOR factor that some are forgetting about. Bill O’Brien! He was once the offensive coordinator with the Pats and understands the type of system Garoppolo has become comfortable with. Plus, Houston has one of the best defenses in the league along with outstanding talent at the skill positions on offense. Let us not forget Garoppolo couldn’t be any worse than Osweiler, who signed a 4 year 72 million dollar contract last offseason.

The real issue the Texans face is how they’re going to acquire Garoppolo and what it will end up costing them. Everyone believes the Pats are most likely going to trade Jimmy for at least a first-round draft choice. New England will probably want more than just a first round pick, though, depending on how high the selection is in this year’s upcoming draft. In this case, though, the Texans must make this deal happen if they want to become super bowl 52 contenders. They have the defense and they have the talent at receiver and running back. But they must get a quarterback that has the capability to make their offense complete. Jimmy Garoppolo is the player that would complete their team and lead to Houston Texans being the preseason favorites to win the AFC South.
