The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Connecticut Tigers by the score of 5-3 at Dutchess Stadium on Monday afternoon. The Renegades were backed by yet another strong start from Mikey York who improved to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.09.

After four scoreless innings on both sides, the Renegades broke out in the fifth inning. The bottom of the inning started innocently enough with an infield single off the bat of Zac Law. Another infield single by Emilio Gustave put runners on first and second before the Tigers recorded two outs and came one strike away from ending the inning.

The inning continued when Jean Ramirez worked a walk and Deion Tansel followed it up with the third infield single of the inning and gave the Renegades a 1-0 lead. Taylor Walls delivered the big hit, a two-run double that extended the Renegades’ lead to 5-0.

The Tigers threatened in both the final two frames but couldn’t catch the Renegades. Relievers Matt Vogel and Hunter Schryver came in to keep the Tigers at bay with the latter earning the save. Connecticut’s Jhonny Mateo was credited with the loss.

The big story of the night was the performance put together by Renegades starter Mikey York. The 21-year-old righty hurled his fourth scoreless outing of the season and third straight. He went six strong, gave up four hits and struck out eight without walking a single batter. The performance lowered his ERA to 1.09 and WHIP to 0.79, both of which rank among the best in the New York-Penn League.

He’s been locked in all season but has especially turned it on over his last three starts. On July 12 he allowed just one hit and struck out seven in six scoreless innings against West Virginia. He followed it up with another scoreless outing against Vermont before yesterday’s performance.

York has been a dominant force for the Renegades all season. In 33 innings he’s allowed just two earned runs, 21 hits, five walks and has struck out 30 batters. His 2017 campaign has been encouraging as his 2016 was spent working his way back from Tommy John surgery.

With the surgery now far behind him, York has turned himself into a legitimate pitching prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays’ organization. The Las Vegas, Nevada native was drafted in the fifth-round of the 2016 Draft and is pitching in just his second professional season.
