While there are several teams that are preparing for the NFL playoffs, there are some that working hard at hoping that they can do better next season. One of those teams happens to be the San Francisco 49ers, who recently fired head coach Chip Kelly after having a bad 2016 season. It seems there is now a former QB, Jeff Garcia, who wants to become the head coach of the team next season.

Several sites are now reporting that former 49ers QB Jeff Garcia now is trying to become the next head coach of the 49ers. It should be noted that Jeff Garcia does have some coaching experience as he was the Quarterback coach for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League and has experience as an Offensive assistant for the then St. Louis Rams. The 49ers may not look at him as a serious candidate, but he hopes they look at him as a possibility.
He first made his intentions clear on Twitter earlier this week and continued it on a San Fransisco sports radio show. When he was asked about wanting to be the next head coach of his former team he said, “Let’s be honest with each other. As much as I believe and feel that I am capable of leading a team, people don’t want you to be able to take the shortcut. They want you to go through the process. They want you to start as an assistant. They want you to work your up to the coordinator. They want you to work your way into that head coaching position.”
He played for the 49ers from 1999-2003 and suited up as an NFL QB as late as 2011 for the Houston Texans. Being that he is familiar with the team and does have a little bit of coaching experience, I don’t see the problem with giving Garcia a shot. The 49ers have had zero success in finding a proper head coach since Jim Harbaugh was the head coach from 2011 until 2014. Prior to him, you need to go back to Steve Mariucci as having a winning record. It should be noted that Mariucci was the head coach from 1999-2003.
Overall, in all honesty, how much worse can Jeff Garcia be than any of the most recent head coaches. The team has not had a winning record since 2013 and has gone downhill from having 12 wins in 2013 to 5 wins in 2015 to just two wins last season. You can only go up from here. It may be tough but you need to start as an assistant coach. Jeff Garcia has gone the right route, now it will be interesting to see if he does become the next head coach.
