Kirk Cousins is one of the most talked about QBs in the NFL. Can he do this, is he worth the contract, will he sign a long-term deal, what will be the terms are all questions that are being asked of him. There is one thing that no one is talking about. That is the loss of his offensive coordinator, Sean McVay to the Los Angeles Rams. How will this effect Cousins? I will answer this below.

Kirk Cousins has been the closest thing to a franchise QB for the Washington Redskins since Mark Rypien or maybe even as far back as Joe Theismann. He continues to set franchise records and if not in a Redskins uniform will set them for other teams as well. Many look at him as a mediocre QB who cannot win the big game. This is untrue. He has won a few big games in his years as a backup and a starter. His development as an NFL QB has been one of the most documented over his early years due to the team that drafted him, when he was drafted, and who behind.

You have to keep in mind that while Cousins may be a 5-yr veteran in terms of the NFL he is truly only going on his 3rd season as a full-time starter. Think back to 2015 and the week 7 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that is when the proverbial light came on. That was only his 16 game as an NFL starter. This is also when Cousins and Sean McVay began to click. This led to the growth of the QB and the OC.

Over the next year and a half, there would be a continued growth of both of them. This would lead to Cousins breaking his 2015 franchise passing yards record and throwing for nearly 5000 yards. This offense would also lead to McVay being one of the hottest candidates for NFL coaches’ openings. Especially paying particular attention to those with young QBs. McVay going to Los Angeles to coach Jared Goff is going to be a great team. He works well with young QBs. However, this is not going to affect Cousins in a negative way.

The development of Cousins is more so credited to Head Coach Jay Gruden bringing in a QB coach by the name of Matt Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh is one of the most highly regarded QB coaches in the NFL. Maintaining him on the staff was critical to the continuing development of Kirk Cousins and the Redskins offense. By promoting Cavanaugh to OC and keeping him in-house, the Redskins made the best move possible as a staff.

Losing McVay is not as bad as it seems. We knew it was only a matter of time before he got a job as an HC. The Los Angeles Rams will be relevant in a couple of years and the development and play of Kirk Cousins will not be hindered. Congratulations Sean McVay. As for the Washington Redskins, focus on making these moves http://theinscribermag.com/washington-redskins-2017-needs/ and your 2017 season will be a return to glory. ALWAYS HTTR!!!
