Plywood has transcended a long way since its inception in the early 20th century to be considered as a major construction material. It is often believed to be a prime substitute for solid wood, due to its impressive quality and high durability. It is a composite material which uses resin and wood fibre. Sheets of wood are plastered together in adjoining layers, under enormous pressure from hydraulic presses to create it. Used for myriad purposes which include construction of floors, walls, cabinets and other furniture, it has become the favourite choice for builders. A process of cross-grain is implemented, which reduces the chances of the wood to be fragmented at the edges when it is nailed.

Types of Plywood

Hardwood: It is usually more expensive than the other varieties due to its beauty and immaculate nature. It has the exorbitant strength and is damage resistant, due to which it is used in the construction of heavy structures, like heavy duty floors and walls. Mahogany, ash, maple, red oak are the various kinds of hardwood available. It is further used for the following:

  • Construction of floors in factories
  • Insulation boxes for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers
  • High-end loudspeakers
  • Playground equipment

Softwood: It is usually made of cedar, spruce, pine, or fir or redwood.  Owing to its extraneous strength as compared to other forms, it is used for industrial construction purposes. It is further used for

  • Floors
  • Walls
  • Construction of roofs
  • Wind bracing panels
  • The internal bodywork of vehicles

Exterior Plywood: It is used as a weather resistant material. It is categorized under softwood plywood and is usually made from fir plywood. It is mostly used in areas which would be constantly exposed to water, like bathroom floors and kitchens.

Composite Plywood: It is used for making cabinets and for construction of furniture. It is highly reputable for its uniformity and longevity. It is made of high-density fiberboard and is conjoined by a thin layer of hardwood. This results in a flat working surface and a deep core, which enhances its strength and quality.

Aircraft Plywood: It is made from imported veneers which use a thermosetting resin, with increased resistance to heat and humidity. It is mostly used in the manufacture of aircraft.

Other varieties of Plywood also include Decorative and flexible and Marine Plywood.

Advantages of using Plywood

Strong and durable: The cross-grain technology of producing it, makes it even stronger and more durable than normal wood.

Lightweight: It is lighter than normal wood, which makes it the first choice for the construction of furniture and decorative items.

More value for money: It is cheaper than standard wood and thus assures your value for money. Unlike standard wood, every inch of a plywood sheet can be used for construction purposes which decreases the chances of wastage.

Eco-friendly: It would not be an exaggeration to say that it is one of the most environmentally friendly products. In today’s scenario of major environmental degradation, it is important to conserve natural resources like wood. Manufacture of a plywood sheet requires less wood than other solid wood products. Thus, in this manner, a significant amount of timber can be saved.

With the above-discussed varieties and advantages, it is a great idea to choose it over standard wood products.
