Lamar Jackson

According to Good Morning Football host Peter Schrager, the New Orleans Saints will draft Drew Brees successor in the first round of the NFL Draft. With the 27th pick in the NFL Draft next month, Schrager has the Saints drafting Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson. The move makes sense that New Orleans makes this kind of move given Brees may only have a few seasons left in the tank.

“I still love this fit. Jackson could serve as one of Drew Brees’ understudies, learn the position from one of the best, be groomed by one of the greatest offensive minds in the game in Sean Payton, and potentially still contribute as he develops,” Schrager wrote.

Lamar Jackson is the type of player who has had mixed reviews, and may need a season or two to adjust to the NFL and learn the Saints’ offense. What better way to start your NFL career than learning from one of the best to ever play the game.

In a related story by Dan Parr of NFL.com, teams wanting to set up interviews with Lamar Jackson are having a bit of trouble making that happen. Jackson is being represented by his mother and has not signed with an official agent.

“I’ve had several teams tell me they’re having trouble just getting to set up appointments to meet with him,” Mike Mayock said Thursday during Path to the Draft’s coverage of the UL pro day. “Not just work out, but appointments to meet with him, to put him up on the board, to work him out, to have dinner with him. And remember, and again I’m not taking a shot here at anybody, his mom is representing him, his mom has obviously his best interest at heart, but you’re doing the kid a disservice if NFL coaches and general managers are calling and you can’t even get an appointment set up.”

Lamar Jackson did not run the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in February and did not run the sprint in his Pro Day workout. The Houston Texans have already had a personal workout with Jackson. It is believed a handful of teams could draft Jackson.

When asked after his throwing session Thursday to explain why he didn’t run the 40, Jackson told Mayock he felt “game speed will tell it all. Gotta catch me first.”
