Matt Harvey’s 2016 season has come to an end. Earlier this week the New York Mets’ star pitcher was placed on the DL with thoracic outlet syndrome in his pitching shoulder. The issue was causing Harvey to lose feeling in his pitching hand. The surgery requires the removal of a rib, which will help the compression in his shoulder.

It has been evident all season something was not right with Harvey. His ERA sat at a bloated 4.86, and his velocity was down from prior seasons. He was also far easier to hit than seasons prior, as the Dark Knight’s strikeouts per nine was also down from his career numbers.

The surgery was inevitable, so having it now will help Harvey to get back to full strength for next season. The Mets will be down an arm, but at least pitching depth is a strong suit within the organization. Steven Matz and Noah Syndergaard are also dealing with their own ailments, but have thus far been able to pitch through them.

The same procedure ended Minnesota Twins’ pitcher Phil Highes’ season within the last week as well. Other players who have undergone the surgery within the past handful of years include Chris Young, Jaime Garcia and Chris Carpenter.
