In one of the biggest splashes in free agency, the Miami Dolphins signed former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace to a five year deal worth $60 million with $30 million guaranteed.
The deal could be as much as $65 million based on incentives. If Wallace makes all $65 million, it will rank behind Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzagerald as the third highest amongst receivers.
The 26-year old Wallace is entering his prime and already has 4,042 yards in only four years. Some could say Miami is landing a future star, as he shows signs of potential. Last year, Wallace was very inconsistent, as in some games he had receiving yards under twenty and sometimes over 100.
The Dolphins were in need of a wide receiver, as quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s number one option was Brian Hartline.
With the addition of Wallace, the Dolphins now have a deep threat that will rack up receptions. Back in 2010 and 2011, Wallace amassed 2,450 yards, as it seemed like the Pittsburgh Steelers had a future star. After a dissapointing 2012 season, the Steelers did not want to pay the amount he was looking for, as he left and took his talents to South Beach.
Wallace has 26 touchdowns in the last three years, with eight in 2012. Even with an inconsistent game, Wallace can generate touchdowns which the Dolphins desperately need. The Dolphins were 7-9 in 2012 with Anthony Fasano having the team-best five touchdowns, so they were desperately looking for a star receiver.
Wallace is an outstanding signing for Miami, as he will excel with the Dolphins, and possibly contribute to a potential playoff run. The only question surrounding him is about his consistency, but it looks as if he will amass 0ver 1,000 yards and around ten touchdowns.
