Miami Marlins pitcher Edinson Volquez has thrown a no-hitter. The Marlins were facing the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday. Volquez completely dominated from the hill. He tossed the game in just 98 pitches, walking two and getting 10 strikeouts. It’s the first no-no of the 2017 season.

The right-hander dedicated the game to two of his late friends, Jose Fernandez and Yordana Ventura. Fernandez died in a boating accident last September. Ventura was killed in an automobile accident this past January.

This is the sixth no-hitter for the Marlins club, since the team began playing in 1993. Volquez was not predicted to have a quality outing. Definitely not one of this caliber. He entered the game with a 4.44 ERA, and a 1.58 WHIP. A collision with Rey Fuentes in the first inning left him limping around the mound. However, Volquez didn’t let it impact his play. The 33-year-old Dominican native earned his first win of the season.

Other Marlins pitchers to throw a no-hitter include:

Al Leiter (1996), Kevin Brown (1997), A.J. Burnett (2001), Anibal Sanchez (2006), and Henderson Alvarez (2013)

The Marlins now have thrown the most no-hitters in baseball (six) since entering the league.

After spending the previous two seasons with the Royals, Volquez signed a two-year deal with the Marlins in December.

Miami went on to win the game, 3-0. The club has improved to 23-31 on the season. The National League East is a tough division. The Marlins are hardly making headway. They sit 11.0 games back, behind the Washington Nationals. The Atlanta Braves are a surprising team. The New York Mets have been upsetting. Second place in the division as a big question mark.
