The San Francisco Giants have added strength to their bullpen. Earlier this afternoon, several reports were coming out that the Giants had acquired left- handed relief pitcher Will Smith from the Brewers. It was first reported by Yahoo’s Jeff Passan. The Brewers are getting minor league pitcher Phil Bickford and catcher Andrew Susac, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. The Brewers tweeted out that the trade was official. There were rumors that he was going to go with Jonathan Lucroy.

Will Smith who is 27 years old, he has a 3.68 ERA, 9.0 K/9, 3.7 BB/9, and has a 33.3% ground ball rate in 22 innings for the Brewers in 2016. Back in March he dealt with a torn LCL and pushed his season debut back to June 2nd. He is under team control through the end of 2019 as an arbitration eligible player. He was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2008 and 2010 was dealt with Kansas City. He was then later traded to Milwaukee for Nori Aoki.

Phil Bickford was drafted 18th overall by the San Francisco Giants last year and currently is in High-A. Andrew Susac who is 26 years old and could become the starting catcher for the Brewers since Jonathan Lucroy was traded today. This trade helps the Giants because it helps the bullpen and it gives the Brewers pieces for the plans. What will be interesting to see is when Bickford will be up in the majors since he is in High-A, it will still be a few years until he will make his debut in the majors.
