The Los Angeles Galaxy officially acquired midfielder Robbie Rogers today in a trade that sent midfielder Mike Magee to the Chicago Fire.
The 26-year-old Rogers has had a standout MLS career, which includes winning the 2008 MLS Cup with the Columbus Crew. In that breakout 2008-2009 season, Rogers notched eight goals and two assists for the Crew.
In addition, Rogers has had a solid career representing the United States National team, taking on more of a facilitator role as he was a key distributor for Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, among others during his 18 appearances representing his country.
Rogers is definitely a good acquisition for the Galaxy, although he has big shoes to fill as he will replace one of the better midfielders in Major League Soccer and fan favorite in Magee, who, as aforementioned, will go to Chicago.
Magee had a storied career for Los Angeles as he established himself as a key playmaker for the Galaxy as he scored 19 goals in four seasons with the squad. Magee had a knack for making key plays in the postseason, as he scored eight goals in 15 playoff appearances with the team.
Magee is definitely a major loss for Los Angeles, although Rogers may have the potential to step up and possibly fill Magee’s role in the next couple of seasons.
The Galaxy are attempting to put themselves in prime position for a possible run at a third straight MLS Cup Championship, as they currently sit fourth in the Western Conference, and although Rogers is a slight downgrade from Magee currently, Los Angeles still has the pieces to contend for a three-peat come the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs.
As for Rogers, the LA Galaxy will play the Seattle Sounders on May 26 at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT on ESPN2 in what could be Rogers’ debut for Los Angeles.
