We are still a month away from anything officially happening, but there are Knicks fans who are truly wondering if Derrick Rose will still be in New York after this season. The Knicks traded for Rose from the Chicago Bulls in a deal that featured Derrick Rose, Justin Holiday, and a second-round pick get shipped to New York for Robin Lopez, Jose Calderon, and Jerian Grant.

It should be noted that the New York Knicks can sign Rose to a three-year extension, with a 7.5 percent increase on December 22nd. At that time the Knicks can only offer the former MVP a two-year extension with 4.5 percent increases. The reason no contract extensions can be put in place is there is a rule in the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the NBA that states that a team that received a player through a trade, can not give the player a large extension for six months. If Rose and the Knicks are not able to agree on some sort of extension, then he becomes a free agent on July 1st.

However, it should be noted that the Knicks have until June 30th to sign Rose to an extension. However, it seems that the Knicks are going to wait until after the season. As mentioned by New York Knicks beat writer, Marc Berman of the New York Post, who wrote , “The Knicks want to make sure that Rose’s body is able to hold up across a full season and if his body is able to, then the Knicks would be willing to pay more this summer.”

So far in his first season with the Knicks, Rose has averaged 16.8 points, 4.9 assists, and approximately 4 and a half rebounds per game. These are higher than Rose’s stats in 2015-16 season with the Bulls. As a Knicks fans, I would be very hesitant to give Rose any sort of long-term deal. While he is only 28 years old, he has torn his ACL in 2012 and tore the medial meniscus in his right knee twice in 2013 and 2015. Unfortunately, there have been several NBA players who have had to end their careers very early due to knee problems.

While it’s great to finally have an actual point guard, I need to be realistic in the sense of how many more years Rose will play at the high competitive level. Also if you’re the Knicks, you don’t want to give someone like Rose a long-term deal and then he destroys his knees and can’t play anymore.
