The last two weeks has seen the New York Yankees trade away the two biggest parts of the bullpen with Andrew Miller to the Indians and Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs. Well, earlier today they were able to add some bullpen help with a familiar face.

Tyler Clippard, who played for the Yankees in 2003 as they drafted him, was traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the New York Yankees. The Diamondbacks ended up getting 24-year-old prospect Vicente Campos who has a 9-3 record with a 3.20 ERA. On the other side, Tyler Clippard has a 2-3 record with a 4.30 ERA over 37 ½ innings and has one save.

Tyler Clippard’s career has spanned for 13 seasons as he has played for the Washington Nationals, New York Mets, Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, and most recently the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tyler’s numbers during his first stint with the Yankees were not terrible as in 529 appearances he has a record of 44-32 with a 2.97 ERA and has 54 saves. With the Yankees losing both Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman, it is expected that Delian Betances will assume the closer role for the remainder of the season and Clippard will have the setup role.

Earlier this season, the Yankees were touted to have a lethal bullpen with Betances, Miller, and Chapman. While the Yankees ended up building towards the future, their bullpen took a hit as it doesn’t scare opponents now with Tyler Clippard and Delian Betances. It helps them for right now, but I don’t see Clippard being part of the plans. It will be interesting to see if the Yankees continue their “fire sale.” It will probably be a bumpy road for the rest of the night and all of tomorrow before the Yankees play the Mets in the Subway Series.
