According to multiple reports, the Dallas Cowboys will release defensive end DeMarcus Ware, after refusing to take a pay cut.

Ware, a nine-year veteran out of Troy and two-time NFL sacks leader (2008, 2010) compiled 574 tackles, 117 sacks, and 32 forced fumbles, establishing himself as one of the best players in franchise history.  Dallas signed quarterback Tony Romo to a $108 million contract last year, partly leading to the need of Ware to take a decrease in salary.

Frankly, this is a horrible decision by the Cowboys, one that could hurt them in the long run. Although Dallas will not have two players with big contracts, losing a defensive playmaker such as Ware’s caliber is not worth the benefits of cutting him.

Dallas ranked 30th in opponent passing yards and 27th in opponent rushing yards last season, making the 2013 Cowboys the worst defense in team history. If the Cowboys were this bad defensively with Ware in the fold, the impact when they lose him could be tremendous.

We will see how Dallas goes about replacing Ware, but unless the team acquires another elite DE, which is unlikely to happen, this move could come to hurt the Cowboys.
