One of the top stories heading into the 2013 NFL preseason was the quarterback competition between veteran Michael Vick and former Arizona Wildcat Nick Foles.

Following a strong 2012-2013 season, Foles became a possible threat to Vick’s starting position, especially considering Vick’s injury concerns.

Multiple reports stated that Vick gained the early lead on Foles in practice, however the Eagles’ first preseason game against the New England Patriots Friday was the first time a national audience could see the Vick versus Foles battle unfold.

Vick looked very comfortable under former University of Oregon coach Chip Kelly’s up-tempo offense, a highlight of his appearance being a 47-yard touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson. That pass capped off a brief 5-play, 77-yard, and 2 minute 15 second drive. Additionally, Vick showcased his mobility during his quick appearance before handing off the signal calling duties to Foles. He went 4-5 for 94 yards and one touchdown.

Foles played well during his time on the field as the Eagles’ offense remained efficient during his stint. Rather than opting for the deep throws like Vick, Foles threw more intermediate throws, as he was solid with his attempts around 8-10 yards down the field. Foles led a Eagles’ touchdown drive utilizing those types of throws in Kelly’s fast-paced system, a drive which was punctuated by a Bryce Brown run.

Taking all factors into account, I would give Vick the edge over Foles following Week 1 as even though Foles had a good performance in his own right, Vick fits slightly better than Foles in Kelly’s dynamic offense.
