COLUMBUS —  After being blanked by Pittsburgh Penguins rookie netminder, Jeff Zatkoff, 3-0, the Columbus Blue Jackets need to find some answers on offense.

Columbus, currently in sixth place in the NHL’s new Metropolitan division, at 5-8 with ten points, scored two goals—both losses—to the high-powered Penguins in a home-and-home series, need to find ways to generate more scoring chances and goals if they are to hang in a top-heavy and stacked Eastern Conference.

Through 13 games, the Blue jackets have scored 33 goals, while allowing 36, rank 19th in goals per game at 2.46, 11th fewest in the NHL.

Granted, not many teams in the East—let alone the NHL can go toe-to-toe with Pittsburgh’s high-powered plethora of forwards in Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Chris Kunitz and the surprising Jussi Jokinen, Columbus has some talent of it’s own in the form of leading scorer Marian Gaborik, R.J. Umberger—a native of Pittsburgh, ironically—and Brandon Dubinsky, give the Jackets a young nucleus to build around.

One place to start in the form of reinvigorating a lack of offense for Columbus, would be the power play as the Blue Jackets rank 20th, and a success rate of 17.4 percent and are the sixth worst in penalty killing at 77.3 percent.

If Columbus can address and rectify these issues, it would take a lot of the scoring load and burden off of Gaborik, and help give the Blue Jackets some much-needed offense.
