It seems like the New York Jets are trying to do better. According to multiple sources, the Jets are set to release center Nick Mangold, an 11- year member of the New York Jets. He has been a fixture on the offensive line since he was drafted by the jets in 2006.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to Jets fans as Mangold has been injury prone the last few year and it seemed that his time was coming to an end in New York. However, when he wasn’t injured, he would end up being one of the more constant Jets players on the field. It should be noted that this release is set to happen either today or sometime this week. The only question that comes up is what teams could use a center.

It should be noted that he has one year left on his contract at a salary of 6.075 million. His former team, the Jets, will end up carrying roughly $3 million in dead money heading into the 2017 season for his contract. By releasing Mangold as early as the Jets are, it gives him a chance to get an early start on the free agency market of 2017. It should be noted that the 2017 free agency market opens on March 9th.

As far as a replacement, it seems that the Jets are going to go with Wesley Johnson as their new center going further, according to Ian Rapport of the NFL Network. It is expected that the Jets are set to release more players and clear more cap space as they try to be successful in 2017. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out for the Jets this offseason. It should be noted that as of this writing, Nick Mangold has announced the release and now it’s the Jets turn to announce it.

Here is the statement that Mangold made via his official Twitter account about the release:
