It’s easy to call a player elite. It’s not as easy to prove it on the field. Shawun Lurry of Northern Illinois is truly elite at his position. In fact, some say he’s one of the Nation’s best Corners.

Going into his Senior year, Lurry has already had one of the most successful careers in MAC Conference history. Playing in 13 games as a true freshman, he was exposed to game action quite early in his college career. That has helped him get to the point he’s at now.

Lurry became the fourth Northern Illinois Huskie to be named First-Team All-American, doing so during his sophomore season. Nobody envisioned that year a MAC Conference athlete out of NIU as an All-American, especially a sophomore.

Going into his Junior year, a lot of pressure was put on Lurry. And while it wasn’t as prolific as his second collegiate season, Lurry was still named to the All-MAC second team. He put up stats of 3 interceptions and 38 tackles, only playing in 10 of 12 games.

When all is said and done, Lurry will quite possibly go down as one of the best players in Northern Illinois history. His 27 career pass breakups are good for fifth all-time in school history. He’s only 4 interceptions away from NIU’s school record.

A case can be made for Lurry to become an All-American again this season. There’s nothing standing in his way of putting up those sophomore year stats. It’s possible the pressure of living up to an All-American year caught up to Lurry. Although, with the hype not as high this year, a Senior season resurgence is likely.

The Huskies could be in play for a Bowl game this season. Given his impressive career thus far, a Bowl win would look mighty good on Shawun Lurry’s resume. And even without a Bowl win, some say he’s already NFL material. That’s just something we will have to wait and see. But the future looks really bright for Shawun Lurry.
