Monday morning Oakland Raiders acquired quarterback Matt Flynn from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick in 2014 and a “conditional” late-round pick in 2015.
There were plenty of rumors swirling around last week on the Oakland Raiders quarterback situation. What started the chain of events Carson Palmer not willing to take a pay cut.
Reports continue to pile-in on how the team felt about Terrel Pryor and the possibilities of the Raiders having “legitimate” interest in Matt Flynn. This became more evident when the Jacksonville Jaguars pulled out from the sweepstakes on Flynn last night and the Buffalo Bills showed interest in Kevin Kolb.
The reports progress as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport confirmed the Raiders are in “deep talks” with the Seahawks regarding a Matt Flynn trade, but will make “a final run” at reworking Palmer’s contract first.
Creating the notion that the Raiders are not charmed by any of the other options available via free agency, and perhaps they’re not thrilled over with any options in the NFL Draft.
Also the Mercury News reported, “for those writing off Palmer, they are overlooking the fact that releasing or trading him would cost the Raiders $9.34 million in dead money on the 2013 salary cap.” And added Two people familiar with the situation said the Raiders did not ask Palmer to accept a $10 million salary for 2013″.
It only became forthcoming that Flynn was headed to Oakland. As the Seahawks were reportedly working on a trade involving Flynn with an undisclosed team, and it only appeared an agreement was imminent.
Now its time for Flynn to shine with the Raiders because his only breakout game came against the Lions in 2011 when Detroit already secured a playoff spot, he lacks even average arm talent . The next phase for the quarterback situation in Oakland is trading Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals. But will the team select another arm in the NFL Draft come the end of the month still remains in question.
