At a school that has produced Heisman Trophy winning running backs such as Archie Griffin, Eddie George, NFL stars such as Robert Smith, Ezekiel Elliott and phenoms such as Maurice Clarett, none of them did was J.K. Dobbins accomplished in Ohio State’s 49-21 win over Indiana.

Dobbins, a 5’10, 208 pound, 18-year-old true freshman from La Grange, Texas, rushed 29 times for 181 yards, in Ohio State’s 49-21 win, breaking Clarett’s single-game rushing mark for a freshman of 175 set vs Texas Tech in 2002.

In his breakout performance, the “La Grange Galloper” displayed awe-inspiring jump cuts, nimbleness and speed in providing the Buckeyes a spark due to the absence of sophomore tailback Mike Weber.

With Weber out for an undisclosed amount of time due to cramps, the emergence of Dobbins gives the already-loaded second-ranked Buckeyes another weapon on the ground for them to unleash upon unsuspecting defenses in 2017.

It’s only one game but to put up the third-best single game rushing performance ever for player at a school that has a storied history of producing some good running backs says something.

Could Dobbins be the next frosh superstar for the Scarlet and Gray? It may be a bit premature to say such a thing, but what a way to make a first impression.

If last night’s game is any indication of how new offensive coordinator, Kevin Wilson plans on using his tailbacks, perhaps we may see a combination of Dobbins and Weber or have Dobbins split out into the Percy Hervin “h-back” role synonymous with Urban Meyer’s spread-shotgun offense.

With a primetime matchup vs. a highly-ranked seventh-ranked Oklahoma down in the Horseshoe and in front of a packed house of 100,000-plus, Dobbins will not only get a chance to properly introduce himself to the Buckeye faithful, but all of college football on a nationally televised scale.
