Before I get into the ongoing situation regarding Colin Kaepernick, I would like to make it clear that I am in no way defending or condoning what he did.
As the 2017 NFL season is set to begin, there happens to be one quarterback that is still unemployed. Colin Kaepernick has yet to find a new home after he didn’t get resigned by the San Francisco 49ers after the 2016 season. While he didn’t produce high numbers while he was with the 49ers, some have said that the reason why no team has signed him is that of the actions he did prior to some games in the 2016 season.
For some games, he would end up kneeling during the National Anthem and was almost acting very unpatriotic. In an interview with ESPN website, Kaepernick talked about why he chose to kneel for the National Anthem. He said to Nick Wagner, “For me, it was something that I couldn’t see another ‘hashtag Sandra Bland, hashtag Tamir Rice, hashtag Walter Scott, hashtag Eric Garner’, the list goes on and on.” He continued,“At what point do we do something about it? At what point do we take a stand…..” As of this writing, he has yet to find a new home. There have been some rumblings about him possibly signing with the Ravens after the news about Flacco.
However, it has caused such a stir that I don’t understand. He has gone on the record several times by saying that he isn’t doing the kneeling during the national anthem and the NFL still feels to punish him. While you have guys who beat their spouses, did drugs killed animals and were still allowed to play in the NFL. There is a big match happening the end of this month between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. The Pay-Per-View is charging a minimum of $100. People will still buy an event to watch two guys who have thrown around homophobic slurs.
Let us not forget about the networks that decide to air commercials instead of the National Anthem. Why aren’t there any protests for stuff like this? If what Kaepernick did was so wrong, then why don’t we hold everyone to the same standard? I personally feel there is a bit of hypocrisy when it comes to this situation.Personally, the hypocrisy with the whole Colin Kaepernick situation comes from the American people. For some reasons it was ok to forgive Michael Vick after his dog fighting saga ended and he served jail time. However, Kaepernick just voiced his stance on the situation with the cops and he is not employed.
Again I am not saying what he did was right, but the fact that it’s still a big deal now is simply mind boggling. Last I checked, we live in America and you are allowed to voice your opinion.
