With the 2017 NFL Draft less than two months away, there is much speculation as to where prospects will be taken. One name to keep an eye on is Texas Tech Red Raiders gunslinger Patrick Mahomes II.

Mahomes II, the son of former MLB pitcher, Pat Mahomes, is perhaps the draft’s most dangerous wildcard as he has been steadily rising up various mock drafts, and may very well be picked as high as No.10 to the Buffalo Bills or as low as No.33 to the Cleveland Browns in the second round.

At 6’3 and 230 pounds, Mahomes II has the perfect type of build to survive playing in the physical and hard-hitting AFC North, the arm strength to sling the ball thru cold and bitterly winter winds of December.

So, first round, second or somewhere in between? Where will Mahomes land?

Hypothetically speaking, suppose that Mahomes is on the board after the Bills—who will likely cut Tyrod Taylor—decide to not take him and that Cleveland is in position to take Mahomes II with the 12th overall pick.

Does Cleveland pull the trigger?

With rumors swirling around the Browns of Cleveland possibly taking former Mentor High standout Mitch Trubisky with the top overall pick, cutting Robert Griffin III, going after has-beens such as Tony Romo or looking at fellow draft prospects such as Deshaun Watson, DeShone Kizer, Myles Garrett, Jonathan Allen or Solomon Thomas, the Browns are in a rare position of being able to land the player that it wants.

Could that player possibly be Mahomes at 12, 33—or dare I even say—with the top overall pick?

For the record, I’ve never been high on Watson from the start, not quite impressed with Kizer and not subscribing to the growing hometown hype of taking Trubisky.

And while I have my reservations of Mahomes due to the much-maligned Air Raid spread offense that Texas tech runs and the even worse reputation of the Big 12 in producing NFL starting quarterbacks, I’m slowly beginning to warm up to him as he may be the best QB prospect in the entire draft.

Perhaps it’s sue to the lack of a bonafide franchise-type of QB in this draft, or the growing hype of Watson being compared to Michael Jordan is the Browns pass on him, but I have to say that my opinion of Mahomes has changed due to the physical and untapped rawness that I see in him.

Aside from his gaudy stat line of 5,052 yards passing, 65.7 completion percentage, 41 passing touchdowns and averaging 421.0 yards a game, one stat that is overlooked is his ability to be a dual-threat on the ground in rushing for 285 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Along with his NFL quality arm, Mahomes who has adequate mobility, enables him to extend plays. Such ability to run and throw from the pocket could entice a team such as Cleveland to take him early in the draft.

The only question that remains between now and Draft Day is whether or not the Browns see Mahomes as a worthy first-round option.
